| Dwight shines on cover CD
Dwight Yoakam collects an eclectic mix of songs to cover on this project, ranging from the Clash classic "Train In Vain" to the Beatles chestnut "Things We Said Today." Some highlights on this disc are the L.A. country/rock duet with Sheryl Crow "Baby Don't Go," a souped-up take on the Glen Campbell standard "Wichita Lineman," and, most unexpectedly, a hidden a cappella take on the Jimmy Rodgers classic "T For Texas, T For Tennessee."

| More delight from Dwight
Although music critics' reviews of this 1997 release of cover tunes (thus, "Under the Covers") delivered through Yoakam's Bakersfield stylings fell flat, this ranks among the best in my comprehensive collection of Yoakam performances. You can't approach his delivery of Roy Orbison's "Claudette," the Beatles' classic "Things We Said Today" and a chilling rendition of a Glen Campbell favorite, "Wichita Lineman" with your ears set to hear the song the way the original performers sang it. And it doesn't appear that was Yoakam's intent -- same as with his second "cover" album, "In Other's Words." (Another excellent Yoakam production. ) The reward is hearing THAT voice -- one that cracks and yodels and twangs like no other -- applied to anything from pop to Texas Swing to even Sinatra-like verve. And it still sounds like Dwight Yoakam. For some, it's a voice only a mother could love; for others, there's no other one like it in the world. Perhaps it's just a CD for the die-hard Yoakam fan, who, like me, has an almost "addiction" to the man's voice and range -- as well as respect for his creativity and innovation in fusing musical types, preserving others, and exploring boundaries beyond his country/Appalachian folk roots. Take this CD for what it is -- a collection of covers -- given new breath and interpretation -- and not "copies" of the originals we've all heard from no-name bands that practice in garages and play for local bars and beer-soaked wedding receptions. One of the best performances is Yoakam's treatment of "North to Alaska" -- which draws from some of the richness in his voice as he controls the range of tenor he is so agile in achieving. Maybe not for everyone, but a definite addition to the Dwight Yoakam fan's collection.
