During the production of The Rhythm of the Saints, Paul Simon latched upon the idea of turning the story of Salvador Agron -- a '50s Puerto Rican hoodlum nicknamed the Capeman -- into a musical. (Agron was convicted of stabbing two kids to death during a New York street fight; during his prison term, he educated himself and turned into a poet and activist.) Collaborating with poet Derek Walcott on the lyrics and book, Simon worked on the musical for seven years, writing a set of songs that evoked doo wop, '50s rock & roll, and Puerto Rican music. A few months before the Broadway premiere of The Capeman, Simon -- who was not performing in the musical -- released Songs from The Capeman, an album that functioned as a calling card for the play. The record suggests what a complex and ambitious musical The Capeman may be, but it doesn't succeed on its own terms. Simon's songs have the narrative drivRolling Stone (11/27/97, pp.106-107) - 4 Stars (out of 5) - "...terrifically satisfying. Simon has found a surprisingly effective musical voice--intermingling doo-wop, traditional Latin styles and art-song sophistication..." Entertainment Weekly (11/21/97, p.131) - "...it's a complex and subtly exuberant piece of work....For all its Eisenhower-era harmonizing and crime-story characters, SONGS FROM THE CAPEMAN ultimately feels like an old-fangled Paul Simon album, which may be its most endearing quality..." - Rating: A- Songs From The Capeman Music | List Price | $32.99 (You save $6.20) | | Category | Rock Albums, Pop CDs, Vocal, Rock/Pop, Folk Rock, Singer/Songwriter | | Label | Warner Bros. Songs From The Capeman
$8.69 After almost five years out of the game, Raven Music is back pioneering its trademark style of Hi-NRG dance and infectious melodies. An edgier production, Attack! also heralds Raven’s unique ‘heavy dance’ method, melding metal and dance together for some truly earth-shattering tracks (see track breakdown below). Incorporating live guitar and an electronica mix that is both eclectic and original, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a more unique release this year.Track Breakdown:1) Raven Theme — An introduction to the madness within, Theme is just the beginning…2) Shake It — Like the title, this mix of metal and melody is sure to get you movin’. With some of the catchiest vocal samples on the whole album and fearsome guitar-work, it’s dance like you’ve never heard it before.3) Creep — 'The' heavy-dance anthem. Combing a soaring Prophet synth-line with a rock-hard bottom end, Creep is essentially two tracks in one. Epic.4) Lift — If you want to get that party rockin’, send this through your speakers. ...

$13.59 Although the album is entitled Gaps, the irony (not foreseen at the time it was titled), is that one of its notable features will be, precisely, the almost complete absence of any gaps between tracks, each one segued into the next with the aid of field recordings and other assorted noises and soundscapes. Expect the same endearing humour, dry wit, willfully obtuse song titles, unruly samples, emotional directness and of course ...
