Detractors will undoubtedly peg them as Marilyn Manson imitators, but that's like putting down Stevie Ray Vaughan for his Hendrixisms. The band works well within the parameters of their chosen genre, and if you go for the industrial-inflected synth rock of Nine Inch Nails, Marilyn Manson, etc., you'd be foolish to overlook CANDYASS. The sonic assualt is almost unrelentingly brutal, as pounding drums, jackhammer guitars and wailing, buzzing synths (all heavily processed) pin your ears back. The cold, detached vocal style matches the uncompromising electro-rock arrangements perfectly. Apocalyptic, iconoclastic and willfully abrasive, ORGY is the worst nightmare of every teen's parents, and that's what rock & roll's all about.

Amazing, Amazing Album I got the album when it first came out - end of August 1998. Since then, I've bought THREE copies because I wore out the other ones. This album is by far one of the best albums put out in the 90's... perhaps even before that. Orgy has such a distinctive sound, and with a mix of Amir's synth, Paige's bass, Bobby and Ryan's drumming and guitar, and Jay's incredibly hyptonitizing voice...it's perhaps the perfect album to own. I absolutely adore Orgy in general, but this album was THE milestone. Amazing. Submitted by Marlena (Plattsburgh, NY, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

| | Slimm Calhoun Skinny CD (2000)
Candyass
$9.29 Southern rapper Slimm Calhoun's work should appeal to fans of Outkast and other practitioners of the down-south hip-hop sound. Admittedly, Calhoun's street-conscious style is less about incorporating freaky Funkadelic licks than it is about offering the southern version of west coast artists like Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg. Like Snoop, Calhoun mixes his tales of life on the street with insinuating rhythms, infectious riffs, and a laid-back, understated style that enables him to keep it real without ever seeming overbearing. You can almost hear the hot southern sun shining down on the thick, lazy beats as Calhoun displays a lyrical skill that's impressive but never ostentatious. If you want to hear stories from the street delivered with a touch of southern flavor, you need look no further than Slimm Calhoun's THE SKINNY.
Recorded at The Dungeon, Stankonia, Patchwerk Studios, Atlanta, Georgia.
Personnel includes: Slimm Calhoun, Killer Mike, Backbone, Big Boi, Andre 3000, Sleepy Brown, ...
| | Jimmy Webb Ten Easy Pieces CD (1996)
Candyass
$11.29 Listening to Jimmy Webb sing his most well-known compositions, all of which entered the pop pantheon by way of other voices (the Fifth Dimension, Glen Campbell, et. al.), is like hearing a poet read his own work. One is overwhelmed by a sense of rightness, that this is the way these songs were meant to be sung. While the considerable charms of the original recordings (Art Garfunkel's gorgeous reading of "All I Know," Glen Campbell's workmanlike approach to the transcendent "Wichita Lineman") are undeniable, these sparse, piano-based versions have a stark nobility that pares the songs down to their bare bones. It is to Webb's credit as a pop craftsman that ...
| | Violent Femmes CDs (1983)
Candyass
$5.99 Recorded between 1981 & 1983. Includes liner notes by Michael Azerrad.
An undisputed classic of the American rock underground, the Violent Femmes' 1982 self-titled debut still shines with its original luster. Quirky, catchy, innovative, and explosive, the Femmes made what was probably the first acoustic punk-folk-rockabilly-New Wave document for the dispossessed. The formula is as ingenious as it is simple--a trio playing guitar, bass, and drums runs through songs of adolescent angst, vulnerability, and social/sexual frustration.
In addition to their distinctive, minimal sound--guitarist Gordon Gano's rhythmic chord progressions filled out by Brian Ritchie's fluid bass and Victor De Lorenzo's aggressive brushwork on the drums--it is Gano's singing and superb songwriting that earmarks VIOLENT FEMMES. For the most part, Gano sounds like a psychotic, self-pitying, hormonally crazed teenager as he whines, stutters, and yowls his ...
