(1 Customer Review)
The mid-'80s saw Depeche Mode go through an intense musical development. Their fey, pretty-boy image of the early '80s turned into a portrait of intense, highly unique artists, reveling in the throes of obsession. The quirky pop tunes that had put them on the map turned into deep, introspective works, though they were catchy (and successful) nonetheless. In short, they matured from pop stars to artists. Guitars occasionally crept in, and their work of the period covered on the two disc set, THE SINGLES 1986-1998, bears an overall more serious tone than that which preceded it.
The band's proclivities are best represented in the relentless throb and psychosexual subject matter of the ubiquitous dance-floor classic "Personal Jesus," in which David Gahan's deadpan delivery and powerful baritone create the perfect picture of all-consuming desire. "Strangelove" and the epic-sounding album opener "Stripped" create a similar atmosphere of deviance. "Behind The Wheel" explores dominance, and the menace of songs like "Never Let Me Down Again" is occasionally offset by the unabashed vulnerability of Martin Gore, who takes over vocal chores on "A Question Of Lust."

In the early '80s, Collins took a break from the helm of Genesis to inaugurate a solo career that abandoned his group's art-rock agenda for a mainstream pop approach. In the ensuing years, the king of Nice Guy Pop established himself as one of the world's premier top 40 balladeers, as evidenced by the wall-to-wall hits that make up the balance of this appropriately titled collection. HITS walks the listener through the smooth, well-produced ...

Singles 86>98 music CDs
$10.39 Depeche Mode in the early-1980s existed on two fronts, equally deft at crafting intricately soul-baring albums and unleashing unforgettable dance-club ready hits. THE SINGLES 1981-1985, basically an extension of the earlier set CATHING UP WITH..., focuses on the latter. In its early stages, Depeche Mode's songs were more compactly packed; Gore's lyrics still wandered through the dark recesses of the human existence, but tended for the barrage over the slowly built sucker punch. Gahan's vocals were already sinister, but there was more of an Ian Curtis stoicism to his quaver than the Leonard Cohen deep groove of the later years.
The compilation is full of songs that have gone on to become New Wave classics and dance floor staples. The synth-heavy "Just ...
| | U2 Best Of 1980-1990/The B-Sides CDs (1998)
Singles 86>98 songs
$22.89 U2 burst onto the scene at the onset of the '80s with a majestic, uplifting, earnest approach and a unique textural sound that endeared them to fans and critics alike. They spent the rest of the decade growing up in public, solidifying their status as post-punk icons, marrying the good intentions of old-school alternative rock with the epic sonic scale of classic '70s rockers, never sounding less than totally original and never pausing for a hits compilation--until 1998. BEST OF offers a good representation of the complex body of work that made the band a legend.
Fittingly, the album begins with the debut's "I Will Follow," a statement of commitment to pursuing truth and spirituality ...

Singles 86>98 songs
$14.09 Deuce, the second album from Connecticut's Psychedelic Breakfast, is bursting at the edges with youthful energy and big (occasionally cosmic) ideas. Unfortunately, it is also sophomoric, derivative, and heavy-handed. The members of the quartet, especially guitarist Tim Palmieri, are talented musicians. It's just that they have a hard time separating their music from their influences, which include, most prominently, Phish and Frank Zappa (such as the doubled guitar/vocal melody on the chorus to "Buquebus"). Songs -- such as the 13-minute opening "Tribal Funk Affliction -- careen through stylistic and tempo changes before landing momentarily for some harmonized vocals on silly and/or drug-wisdom lyrics. "Dreams of ecstasy in flight/Living them now it is right to/Free your mind and see the light," they sing on "See the Light." Despite all this, the music is strangely infectious. One can't help but feel the joy at the peak of "Beef Barley," knowing that it probably makes their loyal fans froth. The build is both surprising and immature, and neatly characterizes the pleasures of Deuce. The band hasn't quite worked out a complete ...

$8.01 One of Montreal’s most lyrical new bands, “Puff and the Pillpoppers” have launched their first CD, “Set the World to Flames”. The new album features forty two minutes of acerbic lyrical commentary peppered with moments of tender reflection, recorded most appropriately at their loft in the RCA building in St. Henri. The group drew inspiration ...
