Photographer: Malcolm Hillier. Four years after Disco Volante, Mr. Bungle returns with California, which immediately distinguishes itself from its predecessors -- it's probably their most heavily orchestrated record to date and their most melodic overall, as well as the least dependent on rock styles. That's certainly not to imply that this is a tame or immediately accessible record, nor that Mr. Bungle has suddenly gone sane. There is a stronger lounge-music orientation to the group's trademark rapid-fire genre-hopping; we hear more pop, swing, rockabilly, country & western, bossa nova, Hawaiian and Middle Eastern music, jazz, Zappa-esque doo wop, arty funk, post-rock, space-age pop, spaghetti-Western music, warped circus melodies, and even dramatic pseudo-new age, plus just a smidgen of heavy metal. Sure, some of those sounds have appeared on Mr. Bungle records past, but the difference this time is the focus with which the band deploys its arsenal. California is their most concise album to date, clocking in at around 45 minutes; plus, while the song structures are far from traditional, they're edging more in that direction and that greatly helps the listener in making sense of the often random-sounding juxtapositions of musical genres (assuming, of course, that you're supposed to even try to make sense of them). As with any Mr. Bungle album, California requires at least a few listens to pull together, but its particular brand of schizophrenia isn't nearly as impenetrable as that of Disco Volante, even if it will still make you marvel at the fact that such a defiantly odd, uncommercial band recorded for Warner Bros. ~ Steve Huey With CALIFORNIA, Mr. Bungle has largely ditched its infamous jazz/thrash/circus sound (especially evident on the group's first album) for an even more varied cinematic aesthetic that both embraces and gleefully subverts traditional pop structures. Simply put, this is probably as accessible as Bungle is bound to get, and the results are amazing in both their inventiveness and scope. (As stated in the album's tongue-in-cheek press release, CALIFORNIA shows "evidence of a rock band pretending to have roots in rock music.") Opening with the lounge-laced "Sweet Charity," the album soon shifts to the sci-fi rockabilly/swing stylings of "None of Them Knew They Were Robots" and then to the crooning melodic pop of "Retrovertigo." On other dynamic compositions such as "The Air-Conditioned Nightmare" and "Goodbye Sober Day," Bungle's quick-change genre-hopping is surprisingly seamless, with vocal gymnast Mike Patton acting as the conductor, narrator, and tour guide. "Pink Cigarette" is pure pulp-mystery music, while "The Holy Filament" wouldn't sound out of place on the BRAZIL soundtrack. AlthoughSpin (11/99, p.186) - 7 out of 10 - "...CALIFORNIA's meticulous jump-cutting-bachelor-pad, Bollywood, Tuvan village, and beyond - coheres thanks to their masterful use of space and ambience..." Q (2/00, p.90) - 3 stars out of 5 - "Few records embody such wild-ride adventure as CALIFORNIA....the world is Mr.Bungle's oyster and he gobbles them down by the dozen." Alternative Press (8/99, p.93) - 4 (out of 5) - "...CALIFORNIA is the luau before the typhoon....experimental, catchy, tongue-in-cheek..." CMJ (7/12/99, p.3) - "...With Mr.Bungle's latest album, [Mike Patton] found the open-ended outlet that allows him to manipulate his phonemes to deranged perfection." Simply an album that will never fade away. With a lot more instruments and orchestration, and a better sound, Bungle have outdone themselves. Why are they so good and different from other bands? Because they manage all styles and music from everywhere. From hawaiian style to swing ,crooner, african beat, arab ,tsigans ,circus, they outdone themselves again and again. Thanks Mr Bungle for making this Album. Submitted by Walex (Montreal, Qc, CAN) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
This one takes the cake! I purchased this album on a friend's advice. I'm a fan of inventive and original music and Mr. Bungle defines originality. You will not hear anything like this elsewhere. Among my collection of 200 some odd cds and counting this is my favorite. All the 5 star reviews among this one have it right, California is Mr. Bungle at their best. Buy this album (it's very cheap) and do yourself a favor. Submitted by unprettier (Ile Bizard, Quebec) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
absolutely nutz this is the craziest shizle i've ever heard... its chock-full of time changes, added beats, subtracted beats, style jumps, etc... its wacky beyond any meaning of the word wacky. nothing said could ever fully describe the noise. rock on. WOW! What more can you say about this band. They started out as a funny chaotic type carnival thing and the last CD is more reserved (for them) and grown up. But equally as great, how many bands can do this? Anything they have done is pure gold! And yes Mike Patton is the greatest singer but Trey Spruance is one of the best guitarists and musicians in general that you will ever hear! Trevor Dunn? Only one of the best bassists ever, do I need to go on? Buy it and you will not be able to get this CD out of your head. Its now 2004 and I still listen to it regularly, how many CD's can you say that about almost 5 years later? Submitted by Tim (Utah) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

| | Red Krayola Introduction CD (2006)
California songs
$12.69 The Red Krayola: Stephen Prina, John McEntire, Tom Watson. Personnel: Stephen Prina (vocals, guitar, piano, harpsichord, organ, tambourine); Tom Watson (vocals, guitar, harpsichord, synthesizer); Mayo Thompson (vocals, guitar); John McEntire (ukulele, synthesizer, drums). Audio Mixer: John McEntire. Recording information: Soma E.M.S., Chicago, IL (08/2005). Photographers: Noel Kupersmith; Chris Strong; Rob Clayton; Carlin Wing Wing. The wonderful thing about the Red Krayola has always been that beneath the fractured art-isms and off-kilter ramblings reside some very enjoyable pop songs. This continues to hold true as stage three (stage one being the Texas psyche days and stage two, England) of the band emerges as perhaps its most prolific and consistent period. Joined once again by several Chicago underground luminaries (including Tortoise's John McEntire), INTRODUCTION finds founder and leader Mayo Thompson guiding the band through a sonic maze that touches on everything from folk, cabaret, and jazzy pop to electronica and post-rock, even going so far as to borrow lyrics and melody from "May the Circle Be Unbroken" for the shuffling "Breakout." The addition of accordion player Charlie Abel provides a nice touch that is both buoyant and mysterious, expanding the sonic atmosphere without cluttering it. Thompson's lyrics are still plenty bizarre and delivered in a cracked stream-of-conscious style that comes off like a cross between Bob Dylan and a deeper-voiced Daniel Johnston. The end result is a beautifully scattered yet oddly coherent album from one of the undergound's finest. Red Krayola's vibrancy -- and continuing relevancy -- can perhaps be traced not only to Mayo Thompson's own vision of engaging pop music head-on in recent years, but also to the band's ever-evolving cast. On Introduction (a curious title since RK has been kicking around in one form or another since 1967) Mayo Thompson ...
