Although the movie (from a Stephen King novel) is set in the '30s, THE GREEN MILE's score by Thomas Newman (son of Alfred, cousin of Randy) is thoroughly contemporary, and postmodern to the max in its mix of styles and sounds. Newman is equally at home with a full orchestra, a rock band, or samples; his score switches on a dime from full-bore Copland-esque Marlboro Country Americana to bluesy acoustic slide guitar. The only real concessions to the period here are Fred Astaire singing "Cheek to Cheek" (from TOP HAT), along with songs by Billie Holiday ("I Can't Give You Anything But Love"), Guy Lombardo ("Charmaine"), and unjustly forgotten '30s pop star crooner Gene Austin ("Did You Ever See a Dream Walking?").
Original score by Thomas Newman.
Personnel: Thomas Newman (piano); Billie Holiday (vocals); Sid Page (violin); Jon Clarke (oboe); Michael Fisher (vibraphone, marimba).

BLUE CLEAR SKY won the 1996 Country Music Association Award for Album Of The Year, and George Strait won the C.M.A. award for Male Vocalist Of The Year.
George Strait, one of the most widely admired and emulated singers in modern country, opens up emotionally on BLUE CLEAR SKY. It's a rangy album that touches on several different tempos and styles, from the classically weepy "I Can Still Make Cheyenne" to the playfully swingy "I Ain't Never Seen No One Like You."
With his stately voice buttressed by a versatile band of backing musicians, Strait shows he can still whip out classic country sounds like the frisky "Do The Right Thing" and the introspective "King Of The Mountain." But he closes with the refreshing "Need I Say More," a piano-based lounge number that seems to have been inspired by his duet with Frank Sinatra on 1995's STRAIT OUT OF THE BOX. As Strait croons "let me show you what ...

$17.55 Recorded in 1998-2000 and initially released in 2001, Lucky the Man is a fine, low-key set of contemporary British folk from one of the men who set the foundations for the genre, Wizz Jones. Almost entirely acoustic, the focus is very much on Jones' singing and guitar playing. But he does get some help from some more celebrated friends on assorted tracks, including guitarist John Renbourn, Pentangle singer Jacqui McShee, drummer Gerry Conway, and original Incredible String Band member Clive Palmer. Jones never wrote much of his own material, to the point where including three of his own compositions, as he did on this record, is considered an abundance of original tunes. Otherwise the choice of songs is eclectic, including compositions by Palmer, Archie Fisher, fellow obscure British folkie Al Jones, Ray Charles, cult singer/songwriter Jackson C. ...
