Production units like Mephisto Odyssey get a lot of work as remixers but come up against a challenge when they try to make their own records because what they do, constructing interesting rhythm tracks out of drums, percussion, and synthesizer patterns, seems like only part of what it takes to make music. Since they are not much interested in melody, lyrics, and singing, they tend to import those elements. That's the case here, with raps, toasting, and vocals by guest performers added to eight of the 13 tracks. While the guests add variety, providing the excuse, for example, to slow down the pace to a reggae dub style in "Soundman Connection," featuring Mad Lion, for the most part the vocals seem like vestigial elements, especially because Mephisto Odyssey is such an inventive musical collective. The most interesting and compelling tracks are instrumentals like "Sexy Dancer" and the aptly named "Red Drums" that expose the group's ability to assemble inventive rhythm patterns. Unlike many of their peers, they do not feel required to stuff the sound picture, and they are, in fact, at their best when they deconstruct the overall sound into its elements without ever losing the beat. The only vocal track that matches the background is "Wish," featuring Paula Frazer, who adds a wistful touch to Mephisto Odyssey's music. Next time, maybe they should dispense with the guest stars. ~ William Ruhlmann

Deep Red Connection music CDs
$40.75 This Japanese edition of Sarah Jane Morris's LOVE & PAIN includes one additional song.
To underpin her classic blue-eyed soul voice with electronic swoops and programmed drums is a very clever entrance into Sarah Jane Morris' Love and Pain. The swirling organ and sparse bass do their jobs as well to further bolster the acoustic guitar-driven opening track, "Mad Woman Blues." It serves as the signature, cornerstone piece setting the tone and kicking off a terrifically intriguing series of 12 tunes. These juxtaposed instrumental choices and themes weave in and out of the sonic landscape, making room for other just as titillating production elements such as world-tinged percussion grooves, guitars on the brink of distortion, way-hip sampled bits and beats, processed vocal parts, and more. Morris' smoky voice is the common thread holding it all together. Her performances dance from sultry to sassy in the blink of an eye (or the change of a track, as the case may be). From moment to moment, you might think of Garbage, Moby, Alison Moyet, or Primitive Radio Gods, or even reach as far as Erykah Badu. But while those works might seem similar, Love and Pain is something ...

The group remains most interesting, frankly, for what some of the members did after this music was recorded. Thurston ...
