In the old days -- say, up till five years ago -- up and coming artists seeking to build a grass-roots following as a means to a record deal had to hit the road, sell home-pressed CDs from the bandstand, and pray that an A&R guy might catch them one night. Nowadays, websites like MP3 make it possible to reach literally thousands of people simultaneously; all one has to do is upload songs and a photo to the site, fill out an information form, sit back, and await responses. Upon recording eight songs in the hopes of someday getting a deal, veteran touring saxman Steve Grove sought out the mixing expertise of genre hitmeister Paul Brown. While waiting three months for Brown to clear two days in his schedule for mixing the tracks, Grove threw his home mixes onto MP3. Soon he built a following of over 100 thousand downloading fans. For all the amazing back story to Euge Groove, it's pretty much a straightforward smooth jazz ride: catchy hooks, seductive rhythms, and an occasional splash of fiery horn doubling and tripling that brings Grove back to his days playing with Tower of Power. It's also highly intriguing how he resembles other sax players that Brown helped make successful. "Romeo & Juliet" -- which smacks of Boney James' gently soulful flow -- finds his irresistibly catchy soprano melody soaring above a moody, atmospheric synth harmony line, as the programmed drums roll steadily beneath. Grove's rich, low-toned tenor line floating over the cool, chunky bass driven groove of "Sneak a Peak" brings back warm memories of Sam Riney; the tune is given considerable color by a self-created horn section that urges the main melody line to greater heights. On the retro-soul minded "Vinyl," Grove's emotional soprano line surfs gracefully over a swirl of Danny Jacob's wah-wah guitar clicks and co-producer Michael Egizi's hypnotic and spacy synth swirls. For all his ubiquitousness and soulful demeanor, Brown has been labeled "The Babyface of Smooth Jazz," so it's no surprise to find him producing a twist on the Babyface composed Toni Braxton hit "Another Sad Love Song," with Grove blending soprano and tenor in spots to make the chorus much more in your face than the verse. Grove shows more genuine emotion here and on the dramatic, gospel-tinged closer "The Last Song" than in most other places. Gospel? Did someone say Kirk Whalum? ~ Jonathan Widran

Euge Groove album
$9.09 Steven Eugene Grove, aka Euge Groove, made quite a splash with his self-titled debut album in 2000, attracting enough attention to allow him to quit his day job as a saxophonist for hire for people like Tina Turner. His second smooth jazz release, Play Date, is more of the same and will please the same constituency of casual jazz fans and light FM stations. Again working closely with producer Paul Brown yet producing many of the tracks themselves this time, Grove and his writing partner, Michael Egizi, come up with percolating synthesized and programmed rhythm tracks over which Grove solos melodically. Nothing to write home about in that, of course, except that they vary ...

| | Euge Groove Livin' Large CD (2004)
Euge Groove music CDs
$12.39 A few years prior to this release, veteran touring sideman Steve Grove (Richard Marx, Joe Cocker, Tina Turner) decided to stop hitting the road with pop legends to focus on his smooth jazz career. Despite securing a definite toehold for himself in the sax-heavy genre on the basis of a handful of hit radio singles, he ran into a roadblock with his previous label and jumped ship for the smaller but artist-friendly Narada Jazz. The fact that he's still committed to Livin' Large as a smoothie is reflected in his continued dedication to making picture-perfect sax records like this one. His trademark sound is horn texturing at just the right spots and sometimes on the hook of the song (a notion from his Tower of Power days, no doubt), as on the title track, which features some of his most muscular playing ever, or the midtempo funk of "XXL." Groove always offers a balance between the aggressive and romantic, and here finds the perfect blend on the retro-soul-inspired breathy moods of "Take You Higher" and "Too Cool." Producer Paul Brown ...
| | Peter White Confidential CD (2004)
Euge Groove songs
$7.59 Guitarist Peter White follows up his 2001 release Glow with more solid melodic smooth jazz on Confidential. Once again there is an amiable mix of quiet storm-ready ballads, up-tempo Latin numbers, and groove-oriented soundscapes. Joining White are such instrumental pop luminaries as trumpeter Chris Botti, keyboardist Brian Culbertson, and percussionist Paulinho Da Costa. While there are no particular surprises here, fans of White's incomparable guitar playing should find much to enjoy on this laid-back disc. ~ Matt Collar

| | Euge Groove Just Feels Right CD (2005)
Euge Groove album
$12.25 The sophomore release on Narada's jazz imprint for Tower of Power's former saxman Euge Groove, Just Feels Right is an attempt to return to the music of 1976. The groove is the key to the whole, with a mix of funk, smooth jazz, and what almost sounds like quiet storm popping in from time to time. The album was made with a vintage ethic, using almost no gear made after 1976. The session musicians, as well, are from a different age, taking time to perfect the groove and lay out a nice backing rhythm. The compositions aren't particularly adventurous, but that's not really their purpose either. What they are is generally relaxed, simple works. The string arrangements ...
| | Euge Groove Born 2 Groove CD (2007)
Euge Groove CD music
$11.29 After searching for a more inspired way to indulge his chart-topping contemporary jazz sound, saxophonist/composer/arranger Euge Groove has created his most personal statement to date as an artist. On Born 2 Groove, the versatile saxophonist surrounds himself with an array of masterful gospel musicians who speak a completely different musical language. The result is ten brand new tracks, seven of which were recorded completely live. With special guest appearances by the great Jeffrey Osborne on "Baby If You Only Knew (What I Could Do)" and former Temptations lead singer Ali "Ollie" Woodson on "I Love You More Than You'll Ever Know," Groove should also gain even more appreciation for his musical interpretations from his ever-increasing R&B fan base. The song's themes range from the gently playful ...

| | Marilyn Crispell Gaia CD (1987)
Euge Groove album
$14.35 Named for the Greek goddess of the Earth, this album, recorded in 1987, reaffirms the power of the life-force in fierce, joyous music that is both sexual & spiritual; features bassist Reggie Workman & drummer Doug James
Recorded in 1987.
Gaia. According to Webster's: The earth personified as a goddess mother; mother of Uranus, Mother Earth. This trio date by pianist Marliyn Crispell (who also plays harp here), bassist/percussionist Reggie Workman, and drummer/percussionist Doug James can only be heard as both an invocation to and a celebration of that same goddess. One performance recorded in Woodstock in 1987 is spliced over five tracks. The set begins slowly, whispering spare ideas from Crispell which in turn are furthered immediately by Workman. James joins in and the cacophony begins in earnest. Crispell ...

Euge Groove songs
$18.39 2002 album from the female fronted Finnish symphonic goth/metal super group. Tracks include, 'Bless The Child', 'End Of All Hope' & 'Dead To The World'.
Possibly the biggest success story in the history of Finnish heavy metal, Nightwish celebrated their second chart-topping album in their homeland with 2002's Century Child, which eventually collected numerous awards and went double platinum (60,000 units in Finland) within a year of release. The group's fourth LP overall, Century Child wisely repeated its predecessors' winning characteristics: symphony-enhanced power metal laced with accessible pop sensibilities (mostly straightforward song structures and romantic lyrics), distinguished by the operatic voice of classically trained singer Tarja Turunen. Undoubtedly the key to Nightwish's remarkable success (and since, hugely influential ...

| | Baird Hersey Gathering In The Light CD (2008)
Euge Groove music CDs
$12.25 Krishna Das is one of the most popular kirtan leaders and recording artists in the world of devotional chant, and Baird Hersey, though less well-known, is a respected singer who, with his vocal group Prana, use Tuvan throat singing as a devotional practice and art form. The combined power of these amazing singers is evident from the first note of "Om Narayani." The singers also do a lively remakes of previously released Krishna Das numbers, including the charming and tuneful "Hare Krishna" track from PILGRIM HEART that launched a thousand yoga classes. The soul and sincerity on this CD are off the scales.
THE CD"Gathering In The Light" is a pairing of two musical forces. Kirtan master Krishna Das, and Baird Hersey and his overtone singing choir Prana unite here to make music that’s whole is far greater than the sum of its parts. With the open hearted sound he is so well know for, Krishna Das sings seven of his most beloved chants over arrangements created by Baird, and sung by Prana. But, Prana is far more than a human harmonium. The other worldly ensemble sound of Prana's drones, textures and rising harmonies are a perfect setting for both Baird's high arcing overtone melodies and Krishna Das' rich baritone. The two featured voices, sometimes support one another, and sometimes act as a foil for one another. When placed in the frame of the 8 voice choir, they shine like two spirits in pursuit of the same ethereal goal. Although this is neither purely a Prana CD or Krishna Das CD, It is like nothing else you will hear. "Gathering In The Light" is innovative, heartfelt, and breath taking. THE STORYIn October of 2004 Krishna Das attended a release party for PRANA's first CD, "The Eternal Embrace". After Prana had sung, Krishna Das said to Baird, "Let's make a record together or something".Over the next two year the "or something" was Krishna Das inviting Prana to sing at his larger benefit Kirtans in the New York area. As a part of those evenings KD would join Prana to sing Baird's arrangement of his chant "Puja". The combination of the ethereal sound of overtone singing supporting the ...
