Dire Straits: Mark Knopfler (vocals, guitar); John Illsley (bass); Pick Withers (drums). Additional personnel: Roy Bittan (keyboards). Recorded between July and August 1980. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Without second guitarist David Knopfler, Dire Straits began to move away from its roots rock origins into a jazzier variation of country-rock and singer/songwriter folk-rock. Naturally, this means that Mark Knopfler's ambitions as a songwriter are growing, as the storytelling pretensions of Making Movies indicate. Fortunately, his skills are increasing, as the lovely "Romeo and Juliet," "Tunnel of Love," and "Skateaway" indicate. And Making Movies is helped by a new wave-tinged pop production, which actually helps Knopfler's jazzy inclinations take hold. The record runs out of steam toward the end, closing with the borderline offensive "Les Boys," but the remainder of Making Movies ranks among the band's finest work. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine The last album of their career that sounded as if they were trying to play, instead of going through the motions. David Knopfler had already departed from the band and brother Mark had a free rein, clear from any sibling rivalry. "Solid Rock," "Tunnel Of Love," "Romeo And Juliet" and "Skataway" would be on any decent greatest hits package. Following this artistic triumph they proceeded to release LOVE OVER GOLD, and we all know what album followed after that, don't we?
Rolling Stone - #52 in Rolling Stone's "100 Best Albums Of The 80s" survey. Q (7/96, p.141) - 5 Stars - Indispensable - "...nailed to a pop groove, accessible but worth coming back to....evidence that pub rock roots were not forgotten..." Dire Straits Making Movies Songs Making Movies Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) Best ever! Let me put this in perspective as to how good "Making Movies" is. In 1985, I owned about 1000 assorted Lp's, cassettes and 8-tracks. I got my first CD player and had to decide where to start re-creating my collection. I bought two CD's that day as my first step into the world of compact discs. This masterpiece was one of them. Don't miss 'Skateaway' and 'Tunnel of Love'. 'Romeo and Juliet' is beyond description in its angst and beauty. BUY THIS! The other CD, you ask?
Pink Floyd "Animals." Buy it too! Submitted by a reviewer (Harrisburg, PA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 1 found this helpful.
NO Question! Making Movies the best Dire Straits LP? No question. Yeah, Brothers In Arms was nice, but, let's face it, it was a cash-in album. I'd go so far as to say that the Tunnel Of Love/Romeo & Juliet/Skateaway LP side is one of the best, if not best, studio sides of all time. a great disc from beginning to end This was, I think, the first real indication that Dire Straits would be a musical force in the 80s and beyond. "Dire Straits" and Communique were both good records but Making Movies stepped it up a notch. I would rank it right up there with Brothers in Arms and only slightly below On Every Street on my list of favorite D.S. discs. Standout tracks include Tunnel of Love, Expresso Love, and Solid Rock but there really isn't a bad song on the entire disc. Submitted by a reviewer (Portland, Oregon USA) Was This Review Helpful? A huge leap forward While the first two Dire Straits records were excellent albums, they were a bit limited by the same formula - guitar, bass, and drums playing low-key rock songs. Making Movies, most likely because of the addition of very prominent piano and higher production values, just took the band light-years forward from pub rock into sophisticated, professional compositions (listen to "Tunnel of Love" and "Skateaway" for examples). Knofler's voice is at it's best, especially on songs such as "Romeo and Juliet". The only weak spot on the album is "Solid Rock", which is a bit too much like "Lady Writer" from Communiqué and lacks the depth and complexity the other songs have. All in all, this is an excellent album, and the only one the band's ever made that's better (and not by much) is Brothers in Arms. Submitted by Jake (Maryland, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Dire Straits: Mark Knopfler (vocals, guitar); David Knopfler (guitar, background vocals); John Illsley (bass); Pick Withers (drums). Recorded at Basing St. Studios, London, England in February, 1978. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Composer: Mark Knopfler. Personnel: David Knopfler, Mark Knopfler (vocals, guitar); John Illsley (vocals); Pick Withers (drums). Audio Remasterer: Gregg Geller. Recording information: Basing St. Studios, London, England (02/1978); Basing Street Studios, London, England (02/1978). Dire Straits' minimalist interpretation of pub rock had already crystallized by the time they released their eponymous debut. Driven by Mark Knopfler's spare, tasteful guitar lines and his husky warbling, the album is a set of bluesy rockers. And while the bar band mentality of pub-rock is at the core of Dire Straits -- even the group's breakthrough single, "Sultans of Swing," offered ...

Dire Straits: Mark Knopfler, David Knopfler (vocals, guitar); John Illsley (vocals, bass); Pick Withers (drums). Recorded at Compass Studios, Nassau, Bahamas in December 1978. Personnel: Mark Knopfler (vocals, guitar); David Knopfler, John Illsley (vocals); Boby Bear (keyboards); Pick Withers (drums). Audio Mixer: Gregg Hamm. Audio Remasterer: Bob Ludwig. Recording information: Compass Point Studios, Nassau, Bahamas (12/1978). Illustrator: Geoff Halpin. Rushed out less than nine months after the surprise success of Dire Straits' self-titled debut album, the group's sophomore effort, Communiqué, continues in the same vein. Mark Knopfler and co. had established a sound (derived largely from J.J. Cale) of laid-back shuffles and intricate, bluesy guitar playing, and Communiqué provides more examples of it. "Lady Writer" (a lesser singles chart entry on both sides of ...

Dire Straits: Mark Knopfler (vocals, guitar); Hal Lindes (guitar); Alan Clark (keyboards); John Illsley (bass); Pick Withers (drums). Additional personnel: Mike Mainieri (vibraphone, marimba); Ed Walsh (programming). All tracks have been digitally remastered. Adding a new rhythm guitarist, Dire Straits expands its sounds and ambitions on the sprawling Love Over Gold. In a sense, the album is their prog rock effort, containing only five songs, including the 14-minute opener "Telegraph Road." Since Mark Knopfler is a skilled, tasteful guitarist, he can sustain interest even throughout the languid stretches, but the long, atmospheric, instrumental passages aren't as effective as the group's tight blues-rock, leaving Love Over Gold only a fitfully ...

Dire Straits: Mark Knopfler (vocals, guitar); Hal Lindes (guitar); Guy Fletcher, Alan Clark (keyboards); John Illsley (bass); Terry Williams (drums). Additional personnel: Sting (vocals). Recorded at Air Studios, Monserrat, West Indies. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Brothers in Arms brought the atmospheric, jazz-rock inclinations of Love Over Gold into a pop setting, resulting in a surprise international best-seller. Of course, the success of Brothers in Arms was helped considerably by the clever computer-animated video for "Money for Nothing," a sardonic attack on MTV. But what kept the record selling was Mark Knopfler's increased sense of pop songcraft -- "Money for Nothing" had an indelible guitar riff, "Walk of Life" is a catchy up-tempo boogie variation on "Sultans of Swing," and the melodies of the bluesy "So Far Away" and the down-tempo, Everly Brothers-style "Why Worry" were wistful and lovely. Dire Straits had never been so concise or pop-oriented, and it wore well on them. Though they ...

$10.05 CD contains 8 bonus tracks. A massively underrated album by a band too quickly dismissed as relevant only to the '70s -- fair enough, as the accompanying statement of intent (the title was meant to be descriptive) is pretentious rubbish. Yet there is a real majesty to some of these pop compositions, notably Burnel's devastating "North Winds." The hit single ...
