In the six-year hiatus between BROTHERS IN ARMS and ON EVERY STREET, Mark Knopfler immersed himself in soundtrack work and occasional collaborations with other artists. Knopfler was always hugely influenced by country music, and his passion for this genre was predictably inflamed by winning a pair of 1990 Grammys for his work with Chet Atkins on NECK & NECK. This led to the Scottish guitarist reuniting Dire Straits for what would be the group's final studio album.
With his trademark twangy guitar in tow, Knopfler indulges his love of the American South with odes to Memphis (the chugging "Calling Elvis") and Louisiana (a moody "Planet Of New Orleans"). Throughout STREET, Dire Straits does an impressive job trying on various styles, including infectious rockabilly ("The Bug"), lush countrypolitan ("Ticket To Heaven"), and Appalachian-flavored folk ("Iron Hand"). Elsewhere, Knopfler does his best Dylan vocal on the film-noir blues of "Fade To Black" and has fun playing a boor obsessed with material possessions (the lite-jazz-flavored "My Parties").
All tracks have been digitally remastered.

Dire Straits On Every Street Songs On Every Street Music Review Average Rating: (4.8 out of 5 stars) FIVE STAR PLUS! In my humble opinion, I believe this body of work to be DS's best. I own it all. I've just odered the Super-High-Material Japanese import of this title due to be released Oct 28th 2008. So I'm anxious to hear it and report to you my findings. But the sound quality of this domestic is unreal! One of the better sounding recordings you'll find anywhere. Seriously, I would rate this recording and the music on it in my top ten of all time! On Every Street I really love this album, this one is
probably Dire Straits' best album yet,
The Bug, and Heavy Fuel are my favorite
tracks on this one, although the Bug is
fun to listen to, you may like it, it's
fast rock. Heavy Fuel is my all time
favorite track on this, one I can listen
to over a thousand times. I'd make a
copy with this album, Brothers in Arms, & Sultans of Swing/The Very Best of Dire Straits. Those 3 I would copy, still this one shoulda selled the best.
I think almost everyone needs to like it. Submitted by William (Napa, CA, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Could this be the best yet? Dire Straits has always put out great music but there are a few real standouts, one being "Love Over Gold", another one is "Brothers In Arms". But this set has to be ranked right up there with them! Mark & the band always offer so many different tastes, you can tell that Mark respects many different types of music because he can rock ya, swing ya, bring ya some down home pickin', give ya long beautiful stories & musical landscapes! My favorite tracks from this disc are "On Any Street", "Heavy Fuel", "The Bug" & the best track is "Planet Of New Orleans"!!! I think this will be the last body of work that we see from these guys as "the band" but I could not ask for a better final set from such a great group! Good, but not Best! Don't get me wrong! This is good, but not in the same class with Love Over Gold or Brothers In Arms! But the title tract, as seems to be the case with most of their recordings, except Making Movies where you have to explore inside the tract Skateaway for reference to the title, is phenomenal! The ending to On Every Street has one of the most riveting guitar solos I've ever heard! Submitted by mheinen3 (Oklahoma City, OK, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 0 of 1 found this helpful.
