Queen of the Grand Ole Opry focuses solely on the stand-up comedy of Minnie Pearl, eschewing her occasional forays into music. The shoddy packaging provides no dates for the performances or other information, and in fact the six tracks are simply named "Track One" through "Track Six." Such deficiencies aside, this is a passable document of Minnie Pearl's schtick, which didn't change substantially over time, and which occasionally borrowed from other sources (Uncle Dave Macon, for one). Her humor was straightforward, repetitive and corny with occassional (very) mild double-entendres, and might test the patience even of fervent Jerry Clower fans. Whatever prejudice or fondness one may have regarding Minnie's brand of country comedy, her significance in the history of the Grand Ole Opry is indisputable, and here is a record of her act for those who care to investigate. ~ Greg Adams Queen Of The Grand Ole Opry Music Minnie Pearl Queen Of The Grand Ole Opry Songs | 1. | Track One | |

Queen Of The Grand Ole Opry album
$20.09 Carman's 20 Capitol sides, which never appeared on LP. "Hillbilly Hula" is the best track here, both instrumentally and vocally, and no words can adequately describe its brittle textures and lunatic meter, or Carman's twangy hillbilly singing on this number. His singing is strictly backwoods primitive, and his playing is downright weird throughout -- check out "Hilo March" and the ultra-strange "Samoa Stomp" (Pidgin Samoan ...

| | Taylor Swift Fearless CD (2008) Enhanced CD
Queen Of The Grand Ole Opry music CDs
$13.65 Taylor Swift abandons any pretense that she's a teen on her second album, FEARLESS--which isn't to say that she suddenly tarts herself up, running away from her youth in a manner that's all too familiar to many teen stars. Swift's maturation is deliberate and careful, styled after the crossover country-pop of Shania Twain and Faith Hill before they turned into divas. Despite the success of her self-titled 2006 debut, there's nothing at all diva-like about Swift on FEARLESS: she's soft-spoken and considerate, a big sister instead of a big star. Nowhere is this truer than on "Fifteen," a kind warning for a teen to watch her heart sung from the perspective of a woman who's perhaps twice that age--a sly trick for the 18-year-old Swift. ...

| | Elvis Presley Christmas Duets CD (2008)
Queen Of The Grand Ole Opry album
$11.45 In the manner of Natalie Cole's UNFORGETTABLE, Elvis Presley's CHRISTMAS DUETS is a collection of Christmas songs that Elvis recorded throughout his career, remixed in 2008 to add new vocal parts by many of today's biggest female country stars, some of whom had not yet been born when Elvis died in 1977. Guest vocalists include Carrie Underwood, Martina McBride, Sara Evans, LeAnn Rimes, and Amy Grant. Other guests include Anne Murray and Olivia Newton-John, the only two vocalists here whose careers intersected with Elvis chronologically.

| | Red Nichols 1936 CD (1994)
Queen Of The Grand Ole Opry songs
$12.09 There is relatively little of Red Nichols' cornet on this set of radio transcriptions. Of the dozen tunes, an average vocal group called the Songcopators dominates seven of the selections. The emphasis throughout is on dance music on such numbers as "Milenberg Joys," "Bugle Call Rag" and "Organ Grinder's Swing"...Frank Driggs deserves great credit for the honesty of his liner notes. Although the melodic music is certainly not objectionable...this set is more of interest to Red Nichols completists. ~ Scott Yanow

| | No-Man Speak CD (1999) (Import) Import
Queen Of The Grand Ole Opry album
$16.95 In an interesting artistic choice, the next full No-Man album to appear after Wild Opera was, in ways, the band's first. Originally surfacing as a self-released cassette in the late '80s, Speak was reissued in the late '90s in slightly different form. Rather than a straight re-release, Bowness re-recorded all his vocals for the songs, though the music, with only two exceptions -- "Curtain Dream" and "Night Sky, Sweet Earth" -- stayed the same as when Wilson and founder member Ben Coleman recorded it. The result is an intriguing and sometimes revelatory revisit to the band's earliest days, with Bowness able to address what he felt were some of his vocal limitations or excesses at the time. Wilson's own musical work at this point is generally much more spare and low key than the full-bodied drama and dance which would soon emerge, but he's already clearly demonstrating his ear for both performance and production. Two noteworthy covers appear -- the first, "Pink Moon," is the Nick Drake song of note, confirming Bowness' long-held love for the singer years before his end-of-century popularity. Bowness' delivery is a winner, Wilson's ...
| | Tracy Byrd I'm From The Country CD (1998)
Queen Of The Grand Ole Opry CD music
$6.29 All tracks have been digitally mastered using HDCD technology.
Listening to I'M FROM THE COUNTRY is like spending the night in a Texas honky-tonk--it's a mix of uptempo, boot-scootin' tracks and slow dance numbers, all highlighting Byrd's warm, resonant voice. He switches easily from pleading ballads like "I Want to Feel That Way Again" to playful tracks like "Walkin' The Line," in which a misbehaving man swears that all he needs to make him shape up is a good woman's love. Highlights include "I Still Love the Nightlife," about a man who enjoys a different kind of nighttime activity now that he's settled down, and "On Again, Off Again," a character study of a man who refuses to commit.
The standout is "Back to Texas," in which the Texan narrator chases his girl to Oklahoma and declares he won't return without her. It's got a killer chorus, and Byrd gives a swooningly ...
