Recorded in Los Angeles, California in 1971.
Like its predecessor, The Early Years, Vol. 2 consists of demos recorded by Tom Waits in 1971, two years before he released his debut album, Closing Time. "Hope I Don't Fall in Love With You," "Ol' 55," "Grapefruit Moon," and "Old Shoes" later turned up on that album, while "Shiver Me Timbers," "Diamonds on My Windshield," and "Please Call Me Baby" appeared on Waits' second album, The Heart of Saturday Night, in 1974. The release of the two Early Years albums demonstrates that Waits' better early material made it onto his regular releases -- the previously unreleased stuff, while interesting, is not as good. And since Waits' albums were not overproduced, the main difference between these versions and the familiar ones is that the familiar ones are better. Still, Waits fans will enjoy hearing, for example, "Ol' 55" performed in a higher key and with an acoustic guitar backing. ~ William Ruhlmann Early Years Vol. 2 Review

Five years after their rightfully revered debut, So...How's Your Girl?, brainiac producers Prince Paul and Dan the Automator return with Handsome Boy Modeling School's a-little-too-smug sophomore release, White People. Like the title, a good third of the album feels too forced. Another third is fair, but the remainder is stunning -- mostly song-based and mostly nonirreverent. Tim Meadows' "The Ladies Man" character and a bunch of narration from Modeling School Central keeps the Handsome Boy concept going, but it's a concept that could carry one album, not two (also of note: "The Ladies Man"'s appearances are often tacked right onto the end of tracks, making the album more difficult to whittle down to a concise mixtape). Minus Del tha Funkee Homosapien and Casual, the rappers on White People sound too aware of their surroundings, too mannered. The mega-talented Pharrell Williams' contribution to "Class System" could have been carried off by anyone, so that leaves it up to people from the pop and rock realm to really bring it to the table. They do, with solid songs that could exist outside of Handsome Boy's heavy-with-concept world. Expect Jamie Cullum and John Oates' pop-solid "Biggest Mistake" to show up on a Christina Aguilera album sometime soon, while Cat Power's track is so well formed you have to wonder what the reaction will be when a Handsome Boy fan encounters one of her indie, skeletal, and spent early albums. Anyone who thinks of this band as actor Juliette Lewis's vanity project should already have been dissuaded by the relative merits of their first album. But all doubts are cleared away with this second release, which features anthemic, guitar-driven new wave songwriting and thoughtful, stirring lyrics. Lewis tackles the material with chops, verve, and conviction, mastering a dynamic sing/speak technique that channels equal parts Iggy Pop and Robert Plant. If this is just another acting role, so be it--it's an Oscar-winner.

Apparently, one of the golden rules of rock & roll is that the presence of Dave Grohl on drums makes any band better. It makes a great band transcendent -- see not only Nirvana, of course, but also Queens of the Stone Age -- but it can even make OK bands sound pretty decent, as Juliette and the Licks' second album, Four on the Floor, proves (its very title a seeming allusion to Grohl's cameo).
