Arrangers: Peter Gabriel; Anthony Phillips; Tony Banks; Mike Rutherford; Anthony Phillips Band. Genesis' first truly progressive album, and their first record for the Charisma label (although Trespass was released in America by ABC, which is how MCA came to have it), is important mostly as a formative effort. Peter Gabriel, Tony Banks, and Michael Rutherford are here, but the guitarist is Anthony Phillips and the drummer is John Mayhew. Gabriel, Banks, Phillips, and Rutherford are responsible for the compositions, which are far more ambitious than the group's earlier efforts ("Silent Sun," etc.). Unfortunately, much of what is here is more interesting for what it points toward than what it actually does -- the group reflects a peculiarly dramatic brand of progressive rock, very theatrical as music, but not very successful. The lyrics are complex enough but lack the unity and clarity that would make Genesis' subsequent albums among the most interesting of prog rock efforts to analyze. Gabriel's voice is very expressive but generally lacks power and confidence, while the conventional backup vocalizing by the others is wimpy, and Phillips' playing is muted. Tony Banks' keyboards are the dominant instruments, which isn't that bad, but it isn't the Genesis that everyone came to know. The soft, lyrical "Visions of Angels" and "Stagnation" are typical, gentle works by a band that later learned how to rock much harder. Only one of the songs here, "The Knife" -- which rocks harder than anything else on Trespass and is easily the best track on the album -- lasted in the group's concert repertory past the next album. ~ Bruce Eder TRESPASS is more pastoral and low-key than the Genesis albums that followed it. The interplay between guitarist Anthony Phillips and bassist Mike Rutherford finds the group at its folkiest and most subdued. Tony Banks hadn't yet turned to the synthesizer. Peter Gabriel had not yet reached the heights of poetic socio-political broadside that would mark such albums as FOXTROT. The anomaly here is "The Knife," a gloriously bombastic track full of classical motifs, thundering riffs and rhythms, and a strong anti-war message. It would become one of the most-loved early Genesis tunes. Drummer John Mayhew might be the Pete Best of prog-rock, as he was Genesis's original drummer, ultimately replaced by future bandleader Phil Collins. On this, Mayhew's final recording with Genesis, he shows taste and restraint, laying out for long sections while the sonic tapestries of the guitars and keyboards unfold. Though not an essential pick in the Genesis catalogue, TRESPASS is a satisfying snapshot of this important band's formative development.Mojo (Publisher) (3/01, p.82) - "...It sounds very muddy...but tracks like live favorite 'The Knife' found the group establishing a recognizable identity..." Best Genesis album. Other people are rather fond of iSelling England By The Pound/i and iThe Lamb Lies Down On Broadway/i, but this is my fave. John Peel was rather fond of Genesis for a short time, you can see why when you listen to this album. Totally unlike anything else at the time, even Van Der Graaf Generator and King Crimson (the two greatest prog bands EVER, by the way, so it's saying a lot for me to say that this was totally different from what Fripp and the Generator were doing). Trespass
$12.79 Genesis: Peter Gabriel (vocals, flute, bass drum, tambourine); Steve Hackett (electric guitar, 12-string guitar); Tony Banks (12-string guitar, piano, electric piano, organ, Mellotron); Mike Rutherford (12-string guitar, bass instrument); Phil Collins (drums, percussion). If Genesis truly established themselves as progressive rockers on Trespass, Nursery Cryme is where their signature persona was unveiled: true English eccentrics, one part Lewis Carroll and one part Syd Barrett, creating a fanciful world that emphasized the band's instrumental prowess as much as Peter Gabriel's theatricality. Which isn't to say that all of Nursery Cryme works. There ...

| | Genesis Selling England By The Pound CD (1973)

$19.79 If one had to pare the prog-rock story down to a handful ofessential albums, this would undoubtedly be one of them. SELLING ENGLAND BY THE POUND was the culmination of all that Genesis had been striving for since their late-'60s inception, the refinement of the vision that developed on TRESPASS, NURSERY CRYME, and FOXTROT (somewhere in the world, there's been a second-wave prog outfit named after every one of thesealbums). The fusion of a complex classical mind with an electrified rock heart and pastoral folk spirit defined Genesis' anatomy, and never more effectively than on SELLING ENGLAND. Peter Gabriel's startlingly unpretentious tale-spinning is at its best on "The ...

| | Genesis Wind & Wuthering CD (1976)

$10.49 Genesis: Phil Collins (vocals, drums); Mike Rutherford (guitar, bass); Steve Hackett (guitar); Tony Banks (piano, keyboards, synthesizers). Recorded at Relight Studios, Hilvarerenbeek, Holland. Personnel: Tony Banks (vocals, keyboards); Phil Collins (vocals, drums, percussion); Mike Rutherford, Steve Hackett (guitar). Wind & Wuthering followed quickly on the heels of A Trick of the Tail and they're very much cut from the same cloth, working the same English eccentric ground that was the group's stock in trade since Trespass. But if A Trick of the Tail played like Genesis' attempt at crafting a great Genesis record without Peter Gabriel, as a way of finding their footing as a quartet, Wind & Wuthering finds Genesis tentatively figuring ...

Liner Note Author: Peter Manning Robinson. Recording information: Air Studios, London, England; Studio Guillaume Tell, Paris, France; Townhouse Studios, London, England. Photographer: Patrick Demarchelier. Elton John once claimed that he could remember The One among his latter-day albums because it was the first he recorded without drugs or alcohol. If true -- and there's no reason to doubt him -- that could be the reason why this has more character than most of his albums since the early '80s, holding together well in its deliberately measured, mature songcraft by Elton and Bernie Taupin. There's less gloss than on many of his late-'80s records, and John gives a fairly convincing performance throughout this set of pretty good songs. If there's any real problem, it's that the album just doesn't have many memorable songs. Though they're all reasonably melodic and well-crafted, none of the them have memorable musical or lyrical hooks and, if anything, Chris Thomas' production is too evenhanded. Still, even if it isn't memorable, it does represent a meaningful move forward, just because it does sound warmer and more considered than the records that immediately preceded it. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine This is something of a reunion album; after working apart for some time, Elton John and lyricist Bernie Taupin, the wordsmith behind John's biggest '70s hits, come together again. Also on board after a long hiatus are original Elton John Band members Davey Johnstone and Nigel Olsson. Even "Don't Go Breaking My Heart" duet ...

Trespass
$11.65 Recorded at Chemical Sound, Toronto, Canada. Recording information: Chemical Sound, Toronto, Ontario, Canada (01/2001). Moneen plays unapologetic emo rock, and they do it with such raw talent and believable style that they manage to get away with just about every cliché in the book and still walk away with their heads held high. Combining math rock insanity and Get up Kids-styled harmonies, the Canadian rockers bring to mind earlier days when the overindulgent genre was still somewhat unpretentious and in tune with its post-hardcore ...
