Andrew Lloyd Webber is among the few totally versatile songwriters the world has produced. And although STARLIGHT EXPRESS is often overlooked among his catalogue of classics, it is most representative of his vibrant work ethic. Webber conceives a coming-of-age tale of a boy's sentient toy trains competing in a race to prove their worth. To illustrate the contest, an underlying sense of light-hearted fun is present throughout the two discs. Webber steers clear of dark themes of tragedy and despair, instead resorting to suggestions of hope, acceptance, and friendship. Musically, STARLIGHT EXPRESS is a rousing romp through many genres, including blues, country, rap, and progressive rock, enveloped in a lively new wave, synthesizer pop exterior.
