The soundtrack to the George Lucas film about teenage life in a small California town in the early '60s was probably the best thing about the movie, featuring several dozen outstanding early rock & roll hits. There's nothing terribly obscure here -- in fact, most of these were big smashes -- but it's a good survey of rock's early days, ranging from superstars like Buddy Holly, Chuck Berry, Fats Domino, and the Beach Boys to great one-shots like the Monotones, the Tempos, and Buster Brown. Drawbacks: Wolfman Jack talks over the intros of a few songs, and there are a couple tracks by early-'70s Sha Na Na-type revivalists Flash Cadillac. ~ Richie Unterberger

When you listen to the countless tracks from the soundtrack to "American Graffiti," you go back into time once again to a place that does not exist nowadays...you hear the late,great Wolfman Jack,the sounds of the '50's and beg for more after listening to all of the unique and obscure,and hard to find tracks...It is Rock and Roll history plain and simple,and is a must for any fan of the genre,who is looking for the consumate collection...It will be a treasure for years to come!

I purchased this as a gift for my dad. American Graffiti is one of his all time favorite movies he tortured us kids with growing up. I just gave him the music this weekend and he absolutely LOVED it.

When you picture a bunch of skater kids, you figure they'll be listening to punk rock, but back in the early to mid-'70s, when California surf rats first began to turn skateboarding into something wilder than simple sidewalk surfing, punk rock didn't really exist yet. So what were pioneering skaters listening to while they were first figuring out how to do stunts on ramps or in empty swimming pools? Dogtown and Z-Boys is a documentary on the Santa Monica-based Zephyr Skate Team (aka "The Z-Boys"), who turned skateboarding upside down in the 1970s, and this soundtrack album attempts to capture a typical skater's soundtrack before the Ramones came along and changed everything. And if you hung out with the kids who smoked a lot of pot and preferred cruising the main drag while swilling cheap beer to going to the football game back in the mid-'70s, this will sound a lot like what you heard pouring out of any number of eight-track players; the soundtrack to Dogtown and Z-Boys offers a lot of meat-and-potatoes hard rock from the period, heavy on arena-ready boogie (Joe Walsh, both solo and with the James Gang, and ZZ Top), guitar heroics (Jimi Hendrix and Ted Nugent), and made-to-order teenage rebellion (Thin Lizzy and Alice Cooper).
