| | Thelma & Louise Soundtrack CD (1 Customer Review)
The soundtrack for Ridley Scott's feminist road parable contains just what you'd expect -- plenty of driving music. You can get the gist of Scott's message from Toni Child's "House of Hope" and Marianne Faithfull's electro-pop cover rendition of the hit "Ballad of Lucy Jordan," but you can find music to help you down those long stretches of road in Chris Whitley's "Kick the Stones" as well as covers by Martha Reeves (Van Morrison's "Wild Night"), Charlie Sexton (John Hiatt's "Tennessee Plates") and Kelly Willis (X's "Little Honey"). ~ Brian Mansfield

| | Jennifer Hall Meets...A West Coast Tribute To Gerry Mulligan CD (2007)
Thelma & Louise Soundtrack songs
$13.25 Jennifer Hall is best known for playing baritone sax with Jack Sheldon's big band for a decade and for her work throughout the Los Angeles jazz scene. This CD is an inspired idea for she performs a dozen songs associated with baritonist Gerry Mulligan (who composed all of the numbers except "Bernie's Tune") in a quintet. Two songs apiece match her with fellow baritonist Roger Neumann, the explosive trumpeter Carl Saunders, Tom Kubis on soprano, Terry Harrington (one tune apiece on clarinet and tenor), the exciting trombonist Scott Whitfield and veteran trumpeter Jack Sheldon who sings "Summer's Over." Among the many high points are the two baritones on "Five Brothers," Saunders romping on "Elevation," the interplay between clarinet and baritone on "Apple Core" and Whitfield's two appearances. But in reality each performance has its great and colorful moments. Jennifer Hall holds her own with her guests, the rhythm section of pianist Josh Nelson, bassist Dave Stone and drummer Santo Savino is solid and swinging and there is not a slow moment on the set. Highly recommended. ~ Scott Yanow
"Jennifer Hall's tribute to Gerry Mulligan brings ten west coast jazz veterans together for a celebration that explores Mulligan's music as well as his legacy. Jennifer played baritone saxophone with Jack Sheldon's big band and Ann Patterson's Maiden Voyage, but prefers a quintet format in this intimate session." - Sea Breeze Jazz "Ive heard a number of tributes to the late great Gerry Mulligan, none warmer or more persuasive than this. Jennifer Hall, a superb baritone saxophonist whose abiding respect for Mulligan is evident in every note she plays, has assembled an all-star group of West Coast musicians for a heartfelt remembrance that scans eleven of Mulligan's memorable compositions and another, "Bernie's Tune," that was a hallmark of Mulligan and trumpeter Chet Baker's pianoless quartet in the early '50s." - Jack Bowers, All About Jazz.com"Hall is a solid player with a lovely tone and an incessant swing feel. The cats that she shares the spotlight with are all first rate. The tracks with Saunders, "Elevation" and "Line for Lyons," and Whitfield, "Festive Minor" and "Rocker (Rock Salt)," are the cream of a very fertile crop. Also to be cherished is the Sheldon vocal on "Summer's Over." He is one of those jazz musicians who can parlay a voice that sounds far from classic with a sense ...
| | Adam Levy Washing Day CD (2007)
Thelma & Louise Soundtrack album
$13.85 Adam Levy's "day job" is playing guitar in Norah Jones' band. Not surprisingly, his own music holds some similarities to his boss'. They share certain laid-back musical qualities that swirl jazz, blues and country colorings into the singer/songwriter palette. In fact, Jones covered Levy's "In the Morning" on her Feels Like Home album. One main difference between the two, however, comes from the fact that Levy (not to be confused with the Adam Levy who fronts the Minneapolis roots rock band the Honeydogs) is a guitarist so his music naturally features a much more prominent guitar sound than Jones' piano-based music does. Not strictly a subtle strummer, Levy is not averse to attacking his guitar with enough ferocity to rattle the coffee cups at Starbucks. Both the blues "In the Morning" and the twangy stomper of a murder tale "I Shot Her Down" boast some raucous guitar work. Levy, however, doesn't showboat his guitar skills here, choosing instead to use his typically economical playing to service his songs. He fuels soulful rocker "I Can Promise You That" with a funky guitar line, while the jazzier "Breathe with Me" gets sparked by an eerie guitar figure that perfectly fits the song's nocturnal mood. When Levy slows down the pace on his spare, melancholic romantic laments "Unspoken" and "Longest Day of the Day," he suggest the craftsmanship of a Freedy Johnston. Levy's lyrical skills really shine on the evocatively rendered title track. ...
