| | Steely Dan Gold CD Steely Dan Discography of CDs
This album is not a collection of Steely Dan's hits (though it contains four songs--"FM," "Babylon Sisters," "Hey Nineteen" and "Deacon Blues" that also appear on the A DECADE OF STEELY DAN collection), but rather a well-chosen set of FM radio staples and fan favorites. Songs like "Black Cow" and "Here At The Western World" feature the same impeccable jazz-rock musicianship, obtuse lyrics and polished production as Steely Dan's hits, though the songs on GOLD tend to focus on the slightly more adventurous side of Donald Fagen and Walter Becker's music.
Adding several tracks that were not on the original vinyl version of the album, this expanded edition of GOLD contains several Fagen solo tracks--"Century's End" and "True Companion"--that could have easily come off of almost any Steely Dan album, plus a smoking live version of Steely Dan's "Bodhisattva." While A DECADE OF STEELY DAN is probably the best place to start your Steely Dan collection, GOLD is a wonderful companion disc that offers a well-rounded look at this group's fascinating music.

| | Tad Robinson Did You Ever Wonder CD (2004)
Gold CD music
$13.79 Inspired by distinguished soul/R&B singers such as O.V. Wright, Z.Z. Hill, Bobby "Blue" Bland, and Otis Clay (who provides backing vocals on two tracks), ex-Dave Specter vocalist Robinson turns in a spectacular performance on his third solo outing. Passionate and emotional, Robinson shifts from classy soul to relaxed blues and easygoing pop (he resurrects the Cornelius Brothers & Sister Rose's chart hit "It's Too Late to Turn Back Now" with stunning results). The legendary Willie Henderson (Tyrone Davis, Jackie Wilson) arranged and conducted the horns, adding some authentic flavor. But it's Robinson's powerful voice and terrific songs (he co-wrote five tracks) that are responsible for this album's success. Like the best singers in his genre, the singer exudes a sure sense of dynamics, laying down a sexy groove like on the title track then exploding into screams and wails that propel the music forward. His version of Robert Ward's "Your Love Is Amazing" finds the gospel heart of the song while adding a pop feel. Kevin McKendree and Benjie Porecki's keyboards and longtime associate Alex Schultz's guitar color and mold the sound without stealing ...

| | Summoning Of The Muse: A Tribute To Dead Can Dance CD (2005)
Gold songs
$12.39 Released as the reunited duo carried out its first American tour in years, Summoning of the Muse, much like the previous year's double-CD tribute The Lotus Eaters, is an enjoyable enough collection of reinterpretations of the work of Brendan Perry and Lisa Gerrard that can (understandably enough) never fully capture the beauty of the originals. It's still a fine collection in its own right, serving as a bit of a sampler for the Projekt label along the way -- Projekt head Sam Rosenthal's band Black Tape for a Blue Girl contributes to the collection, bemusingly enough with the very same track they did for The Lotus Eaters, "Fortune Presents Gifts Not According to the Book." The other songs are a mix of previously recorded and released efforts and newer work, beginning with Arcana's appropriate choice, "The Arcane" -- as Peter Bjärgö's arrangements always clearly took inspiration from Dead Can Dance, it's a fine start. (As seems appropriate, Arcana are the only band to appear on the album twice, returning with a majestic ...
| | Stoneground Last Dance CD (2001)
Gold album
$13.19 Beset by disappointing record sales and fractious tensions within the group after three years of constant touring, Stoneground brought their caravan to a rest in Sacramento on January 6, 1973. The band had become a cult favorite through their involvement in the Medicine Ball Caravan film project (English fans, in particular, became enamored with the band's infectious live performances) and performances during the final days of The Fillmore. ...
