When the American expatriate James Marshall Hendrix made his triumphant return to the United States with ARE YOU EXPERIENCED?, he'd just smelted British pop psychedelia, R&B, Bob Dylan and Cream into a gleaming rock and roll alloy. Nothing quite looked or sounded like the musical melting pot that was the Jimi Hendrix Experience. Yet the American release of ARE YOU EXPERIENCED? differed from the British version in one significant respect: "Everybody was scared to relase `Red House' in America," Hendrix recalled, "because they said `America don't like blues, man!'"
Yes, it's hard to believe, but the Experience's original rendition of Jimi's epic "Red House" (recorded in London on December 13, 1966) appears stateside for the very first time on this superb compilation of Hendrix rarities (including 8 previously unreleased tracks), simply entitled BLUES.
BLUES is probably the best packaged, richest sounding, most coherent post-mortem release from the Hendrix archives. Fleshed out by Michael J. Fairchild's detailed, informative essay, BLUES portrays Jimi Hendrix as a classic bluesman, a devout student of the tradition from down home delta stylings to sophisticated urban forms. Framed by his poignant 1967 acoustic 12-string rendition of "Hear My Train 'A Comin'" and a stirring 1970 trio performance, these 11 rough and ready tracks illustrate Hendrix's deep spiritual connections to his blues roots, and his daring experimental take on the shape of future blues to come.
Thus you have a moody studio outtake of his autobiographical "Voodoo Chile Blues" and a ruminative "Born Under A Bad Sign" (in which his Albert King tribute evolves with raga-like complexity). Hendrix's "Catfish Blues" is a powerful evocation of tribal elders Robert Johnson and Muddy Waters, while his abstract chord changes and soaring, strident leads on the shuffling "Jelly 292" are an affectionate parody of classic urban blues lines such as "After Hours" and "Sweet Home Chicago." Taken as a whole, Jimi Hendrix's BLUES is the portrait of a great American original who was (like Stevie Ray Vaughan a generation later) just beginning to scratch the surface of his awesome talent.

Blues
$9.85 Recorded between March 1968 and August 1970. Includes liner notes by John McDermott.
After years of legal wrangling, FIRST RAYS is the initial album released under the direct supervision of the Hendrix family. These remastered classics, previously found on the posthumous albums THE CRY OF LOVE, WAR HEROES and RAINBOW BRIDGE, were originally slated to be part of a double-album sequel to ELECTRIC LADYLAND, a concept that died with Hendrix in 1970.
The compilation of these songs allows us to see the many sides of this innovative artist. Alongside runaway flights of fancy ("Stepping Stone") and overcharged rock/funk explosions ("Room Full Of Mirrors") are beautiful ballads ("Angel") and rollicking numbers that point to a Bob Dylan influence ("My Friend"). Famous friends dot the sonic landscape (Steve Winwood and Chris Wood on "Ezy Rider" and The Ronettes on "Earth Blues"), but Hendrix remains the center of a musical universe whose light was snuffed out far too soon.

Blues
$9.89 Principally recorded at the Record Plant, New York, New York in April and May 1968.
On ELECTRIC LADYLAND Jimi Hendrix stretched and experimented in the studio, going beyond the power-trio format on what would be his last studio album with the Experience. ELECTRIC LADYLAND was revolutionary in its scope and execution. Using New York City's Record Plant as a gateway to free expression, Hendrix traversed an abstract landscape containing compositions as weird and wonderful as "...And The Gods Made Love" and "1983...(A Merman I Should Turn To Be)."
Simultaneously looking forwards and backwards, Hendrix mixed in a song reminiscent of his time on the chitlin' circuit (Earl King's "Come On [Part 1]"), a Bob Dylan favorite ("All Along The Watchtower"), and one of his snappiest singles ("Crosstown Traffic"). Although Hendrix produced and wrote most of this masterpiece, others weighed in with their own contributions. Noel Redding penned "Little Miss Strange," and other guests such as Al Kooper and Buddy Miles showed up to play. Traffic's Steve Winwood and Jack Casady of Jefferson Airplane also made cameos, appearing on this classic album's spiritual center, "Voodoo Chile (Slight Return)."
The Jimi Hendrix Experience: Jimi Hendrix (vocals, guitar, bass); Noel Redding (vocals, bass); Mitch Mitchell (vocals, drums).

| | Jimi Hendrix Axis: Bold As Love CD (1967)
Blues
$9.79 There are still plenty of powerful blues/rock-inflected songs, such as the menacing "If 6 Was 9," the rolling "Spanish Castle Magic" and the spatial title tune. But "Up From The Skies" is a jazzy trio romp, featuring Hendrix's bluesy, vocalized wah-wah pedal. And on the ballads "Little Wing" and "Castles Made Of Sand," Hendrix shifts the focus from the band to the silvery chord/melody accompaniments he often employed to complement his vocals. They are an orchestral effect unto themselves.
Originally released on Reprise.
Includes liner notes by Jym Fahey.
Recorded at Olympic Studios, London, England.
This 1997 reissue of AXIS: BOLD AS LOVE is a newly remastered version that restores the original album artwork. It includes a 24-page booklet with previously-unpublished photos and song lyrics. It is among the first batch of albums on Experience Hendrix, a new label controlled by Hendrix's family.

| | Jimi Hendrix Are You Experienced? CD (1967)
Blues
$9.49 This 1997 reissue of ARE YOU EXPERIENCED? is a remastered version that restores the original LP's track order and album artwork. ARE YOU EXPERIENCED? was previously reissued in 1993 (MCA 10893) with new cover art and a new 17-track running order that included all the songs on either the U.S. or U.K. versions of the original LP. That version is now out of print, and has been replaced by this one, on the Experience Hendrix label, which features remastered versions of the same 17 songs, this time in the order they appeared on the original American LP, with the extra tracks added to the end (a separate version was simultaneously released in the U.K., featuring the same songs but in the original British track order). The Experience Hendrix label is controlled by Hendrix's family.
The 1997 reissue also adds a 24-page booklet with previously-unpublished photos, the original LP liner notes and song lyrics.
Recorded in late 1966 and early 1967 at Olympic Studios, London, England.
Jimi Hendrix's debut recording was an instant classic, and is as startling today as when it first hit the streets in 1967. ARE YOU EXPERIENCED? is probably the most rock-oriented of Hendrix's official studio releases, but its influences are incredibly diverse. "Third Stone From The Sun" recalls the supple octaves of jazz guitarist Wes Montgomery; the churning Afro-Cuban polyrhythms of "Manic Depression" evoke John Coltrane and Elvin Jones; "I Don't Live Today" employs ritualistic Native American drumbeats; and the title tune borrows the Eastern airs of sitarist Ravi Shankar.
The mix, beautifully refreshed on this 1997 reissue, is dark and churning, ...
| | Jimi Hendrix South Saturn Delta CD (1997)
Blues
$10.55 SOUTH SATURN DELTA includes 14 songs that were never before released on domestic CD, 10 of which were previously unavailable anywhere.
Recorded from July 9, 1967 to August 22, 1970. Includes liner notes by John McDermott.
Digitally remastered by Eddie Kramer and George Marino at Sterling Sound, New York, New York.
Although a slew of posthumous scrapings from the Hendrix catalog have cluttered the market in the past, SOUTH SATURN DELTA is a thoroughly researched collection that is anything but slap-dash. The detailed liner notes document the fascinating creative processes this virtuoso went through in his native element: the studio. Enlightening moments abound, such as an early instrumental version of "Little Wing" that has the basic rhythmic structure of "Angel," which is also represented as a demo entitled "Sweet Angel" featuring Hendrix on all instruments.
This disc also provides insight into the different musical roads Hendrix's muse led him down. John Lee Hooker and Lightnin' Hopkins's influences can be felt in Hendrix's solo take on "Midnight Lightning." The title track demonstrates an attempt to integrate horns into his sound, reflecting an unrealized desire to eventually head in more of a jazz direction.
Personnel: Jimi Hendrix (vocals, guitar, bass); Dave Mason (12-string guitar); Larry Lee (guitar); Noel Redding, Billy Cox (bass, background vocals); Buddy Miles (drums, ...
| | Jimi Hendrix Band Of Gypsys CD (1970) Remastered
Blues
$11.15 Following the breakup of the Experience, Hendrix took a sabbatical in Woodstock, New York, hooked up with bassist Billy Cox, his old Air Force running mate, and began jamming with a wide variety of musicians, including R&B drummer Buddy Miles. Hendrix had become self-conscious about his image as a showman and rocker, and about the limitations of thrashing through the same repertoire night after night. BAND OF GYPSYS was an attempt by Hendrix to redefine himself, and in a way heralded his return to the ethos of the blues and R&B, a return assisted by a powerhouse, groove-oriented rhythm section.
During their brief tenure as a band, Band Of Gypsys performed New Year's Eve at the Fillmore East, and this live recording captures some of Hendrix's most monumental solos, particularly his long, intensely emotional improvisation on "Machine Gun" (including the screeches of bombs and gunfire) and his pithy blues work on "Who Knows." Buddy Miles's "Them Changes" illustrates Hendrix's mastery of funk, while "Message of Love" and "Power ...

$12.05 Since the Scorpions' career was at its peak, World Wide Live could not have been recorded at a better time. This 19-track album contains all of their early-'80s hits, and while they aren't as energetic on-stage as they are in the studio, the band still perform with a great amount of flamboyance. The record is the Scorpions' only worthwhile live album and is a must for their fans. ~ Barry Weber

| | Paul Newman Re-Issue! Re-Package! Re-Package! Re-Evaluate The Songs CD (2001)
Blues
$10.09 With a nod toward the title, everything on Re-issue! Re-package! Re-package! Re-evaluate the Songs is either unreleased or has been on various compilations or singles. Paul Newman plays indie rock influenced by its Chicago background, yet not all of the band's members live in Chicago. Somehow, with members living in New York City, Austin, and Chicago, they find a way to make the band work. Paul Newman is refreshing for, while they have a Chicago-influenced instrumental sound akin to Tortoise and Don Caballero, they occasionally lean toward heavier music as well. "Way to Breathe, No-Breath" displays a dark, textured sound combining low-end guitar progression with electronics that are mellow in their focus. Other songs cut the listener up with guitars of shredded aggression. Encapsulated with all of this are the vocals, or lack of them. Emerging only occasionally, when utilized, they are harsh and penetrating. On a track such as "Clear Baby," the entire song erupts, giving the listener Paul Newman's closest similarity to A Minor Forest or more aggressive June of '44 material. Of course, this is the same band that, just ...
