Principally recorded at IBC Studios, Pye Studios and Regent Sound, London, England in 1966. Tracks 1-10 originally released in the U.K. in 1966 as A QUICK ONE on Reaction (593002). Tracks 11-14 originally released in the U.K. in 1966 on the EP READY STEADY WHO! on Reaction (592001). Includes liner notes by Chris Stamp, the original release liner notes from READY STEADY WHO! by Francis Hitching and the original release liner notes from the U.S. album HAPPY JACK by Nick Jones.

This 1995 reissue of A QUICK ONE includes the original British album along with four songs from the EP READY STEADY WHO!, three B-sides ("Doctor, Doctor," "I've Been Away" and "In The City") and three previously unreleased tracks. A QUICK ONE was first released in the U.S. in 1967 under the title HAPPY JACK, with the single "Happy Jack" replacing the British album track "Heatwave."

A pivotal album in the early career of The Who, A QUICK ONE is the bridge between the band's original incarnation as a hard rockin' mod pop group and its subsequent, more ambitious, experimental phase. The album is also notable because it's centerpiece, "A Quick One, While He's Away," represents Pete Townshend's first attempt at "rock opera," a form which he and The Who would later perfect on TOMMY and QUADROPHENIA. The ten-minute track contains all the elements of the trademark Who style--complex arrangements and vocal harmonies, alternating heavy electric and light acoustic passages and a preoccupation with issues of morality and sexuality.

Also interesting is the fact that A QUICK ONE includes, in addition to several Townshend masterpieces, one Roger Daltrey tune and two excellent songs each from both John Entwistle and Keith Moon. The Entwistle-penned tracks ("Whiskey Man" and "Boris the Spider") are among his best and introduced fans for the first time to the virtuoso bassist's dark, twisted sense of humor. Although prior to A QUICK ONE's release The Who had several hit singles, it was this album that put the music world on notice that Townshend and crew were far more than simply a high energy rock & roll band.

The Who's second album is a less impressive outing than their debut, primarily because, at the urging of their managers, all four members penned original material (though Pete Townshend wrote more than anyone else). The pure adrenaline of My Generation also subsided somewhat as the band began to grapple with more complex melodic and lyrical themes, especially on the erratic mini-opera "A Quick One While He's Away." Still, there's some great madness on Keith Moon's instrumental "Cobwebs and Strange," and Townshend delivered some solid mod pop with "Run Run Run" and "So Sad About Us." John Entwistle was also revealed to be a writer of considerable talent (and a morbid bent) on "Whiskey Man" and "Boris the Spider." [The CD reissue adds bonus tracks: some 1966-1967 B-sides, their U.K.-only 1966 Ready Steady Who EP, an acoustic version of "Happy Jack," and a previously unreleased cover of the Everly Brothers' "Man with Money."] ~ Richie Unterberger

5 stars A TRUE HIGHLIGHT
The Who have one of the best and most complete discographies of Rock history. Every album is an essential piece of a magic puzzle and A QUICK ONE is a real highlight. All tracks are awesome,IMHO opinion The Who were the real first Rock And Roll supergroup: the couple Entwhistle-Moon had no contenders as bassist and drummer, and both form a killer rythm section. Roger is one of the best singers/frontmen ever. Pete has a place in history as songwriter but his visceral playing is fantastic, although not being a virtuoso. This reissue is really superb in every way: sound, package, liner notes, bonus tracks. I'd like to give 6 stars instead !.

3 stars Extra tracks poor; CD is mostly mono
I love the Who, and if this were the original stereo Quick One with the original tracks, I would give it four stars. Unfortunately, A) It's obvious to me why the extra tracks were not included in the original release, as they are mostly not very good, and B) Nearly all the tracks on this CD are in mono, even though there was a stereo version of the LP (I used to have it years ago).

5 stars ROCK HISTORY'S GREATEST ROCK BAND STRIKES AGAIN!!!
The Who strike again with their groovy second album. A Quick One While He's Away is the standout track in this excellent package.

5 stars awesome!!!!!!!!
this is a great album, unique cause all the members made contributions in song writing. Entwistle with boris the spider and whiskey man and keith "moon the loon" moon with cobwebs and strange. the mini rock opera "a quick one" is in itself a perfect reason to buy this album.

5 stars Three stars?!?!? Whats going on?
OK, the fact it was only in mono when it first came out was a minor irritation but the music contained within was still absolutely superb. Except for 'A Quick One While He's Away'. Three stars is a bit cruel.

Who Sell Out CD  (1967) Remastered

Quick One
CD $6.55  4.6 stars Top 500 Audio Samples
This 1995 reissue of THE WHO SELL OUT includes songs and jingles not available on the original version. Originally released on Track (612002/613002). Released in the U.S. on Decca (4950/74950) in 1968. Only three albums into its recording career, the Who had already begun to distance itself from its proletarian R&B beginnings. Here, songwriter Pete Townshend follows up on the rock-opera idea he had introduced on A QUICK ONE with the extended, multi-part composition "Rael" and would later expand upon with TOMMY. The band had also begun exploring the form of the concept album. The songs are connected by bits of fake radio commercials and brass fanfares, and there's a little of everything thrown into the mix. All-out rockers like the vengeful "I Can See For Miles" vie for the listener's attention with the romantic declarations ...

Who's Next CD  (1971) Remastered

Quick One
CD $10.45  5 stars Top 100 Audio Samples
Recorded between 1968 & 1971. Includes liner notes by Pete Townshend, John Atkins, and Chris Charlesworth. This remastered edition of WHO'S NEXT features seven bonus tracks. Though Pete Townshend was originally unhappy with WHO'S NEXT, it was quickly welcomed by critics and fans, becoming one of the most celebrated titles in their enduring catalog. His frustrations boiled down to the album being a compromised version of a larger work he'd envisioned, LIFEHOUSE, which proved too unwieldy to be realized. Expanded to a two-disc set with essays by both Townshend and John Atkins, the original nine-song album is expanded with six additional studio tracks. These include earlier versions of the album's songs and a cover of Holland-Dozier-Holland's "Baby Don't You Do It." Recorded in New York during the spring of 1971 in the midst of a fraying relationship with producer Kit Lambert, the early cuts clearly don't have the sonic breadth and wallop of what the Who achieved back in England later in the year, but are fascinating nonetheless. The second disc was recorded live before an invited ...

Who Odds And Sods CD  (1974) Remastered

Quick One
CD $10.79  4.2 stars Audio Samples
ODDS AND SODS is a collection of outtakes and rarities from the 1960s through the early '70s, including "I'm The Face," recorded by The Who when they called themselves The High Numbers. ODDS AND SODS stands out a bit in the Who canon. The aptly titled 1974 collection features songs that, for one reason or another, didn't end up on their initial recordings. It's a mixed bag to be sure, one that includes pre-Who numbers like "I'm the Face," introspective and religious-themed pop ("Too Much of Anything," "Faith in Something Bigger"), and some inspired goofiness like the anti-smoking "Little Billy." Unlike a lot of out-takes collections, there are no clinkers here, and there are several gems. "Pure and Easy," from the aborted "Lighthouse" project, ranks with any of the great melodies Pete Townshend has written. The slowly building "Naked Eye," passionately sung in alternating verses by Daltrey and Townshend, ebbs and flows to an explosive climax. The most familiar tune here is probably "Long Live Rock," whose canny lyrics ...

A remastered and greatly expanded version of THE WHO SINGS MY GENERATION was released in 2002 as MY GENERATION: DELUXE EDITION. Includes liner notes by Mike Shaw, Shel Talmy and Andy Neill. This is a Super Audio CD playable only on Super Audio CD players. "Ours is a group with built-in hate." Pete Townshend said that in 1965, around the time that THE WHO SING MY GENERATION came out. That hate--or, more accurately, angst--jumps out of the grooves on the album. Although the line between righteous anger and self-centered bitchiness occasionally wears thin, there is no denying that the Who were truly revolutionary. The arresting teenage anthem "My Generation," the shaky solidarity of "The Kids Are Alright," the dizzy confusion of "Instant Party (Circles)"--never had pop music expressed such raw emotions in such an uncompromising manner. At the same time, Townshend, despite his bluster, could not escape the fact that underneath his rage lay a melodist worthy of the ...

Released as a companion CD soundtrack to a live DVD/VHS offering, this two-disc set captures the group's Las Vegas show at the House of Blues. This is the Australian edition of AC/DC's first album, and is one of rock's great unsung masterpieces. "It's a Long Way to the Top (If You Wanna Rock N Roll)," "TNT," and "Live Wire" are among the gems in the offing. Originally unveiled in December 1975, TNT was the second AC/DC album released in their native Australia, but is often overlooked outside the Land Down Under because its best tracks were later combined with those from the band's first domestic album, High Voltage, for reissue as their international debut from 1976 -- also entitled High Voltage. Confused? That's actually quite understandable, since the songs culled from TNT also formed the backbone of that international release, including the entire, flawless first album side, made up of such all-time classics as "It's a Long Way to the Top," "Rock 'n' Roll Singer," "The Jack," and "Live Wire." TNT's B-side was nearly as formidable: boasting both of those Australian album title tracks -- the proto-punk crunch of "T.N.T." and the suitably electrifying "High Voltage" -- as well as a much-needed remake of the group's very first single, "Can I Sit Next to You Girl," recorded two years earlier with original singer Dave Evans. All three also made it into the international edition of High Voltage, and as for the two tracks that did not: one was concert favorite, "Rocker," which would be duly unearthed for the Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap LP, a short time later; and the other was a reverential but not exactly life-altering cover of Chuck Berry's "School Days," which eventually surfaced ...
