Principally recorded at the Record Plant, New York, New York in April and May 1968.

On ELECTRIC LADYLAND Jimi Hendrix stretched and experimented in the studio, going beyond the power-trio format on what would be his last studio album with the Experience. ELECTRIC LADYLAND was revolutionary in its scope and execution. Using New York City's Record Plant as a gateway to free expression, Hendrix traversed an abstract landscape containing compositions as weird and wonderful as "...And The Gods Made Love" and "1983...(A Merman I Should Turn To Be)."

Simultaneously looking forwards and backwards, Hendrix mixed in a song reminiscent of his time on the chitlin' circuit (Earl King's "Come On [Part 1]"), a Bob Dylan favorite ("All Along The Watchtower"), and one of his snappiest singles ("Crosstown Traffic"). Although Hendrix produced and wrote most of this masterpiece, others weighed in with their own contributions. Noel Redding penned "Little Miss Strange," and other guests such as Al Kooper and Buddy Miles showed up to play. Traffic's Steve Winwood and Jack Casady of Jefferson Airplane also made cameos, appearing on this classic album's spiritual center, "Voodoo Chile (Slight Return)."

5 stars THE ULTIMATE EXPERIENCE!!!
This is Hendrix's finest work. His guitar blazes through the stratosphere, taking music to new heights of excellence and virtousity. The album takes you on a musical journey; experience the magic of the voodoo chile, the speed of crosstown traffic, the lover's call of the girl with gypsy eyes, see the joker and the fool along the watchtower, and listen as Hendrix continues to burn the midnight lamp. Enter 'Electric Ladyland', a place where the guitar has entered a whole new dimension of sonic brilliance.

5 stars Mind-blowing
Some think Hendrix was more like a jazz musician, and they are partially right. So, he might sound strange and "unfocused" to the ears of a pop-rock fanatic. For me, it's the most experimental and curageous of Hendrix's albums. With Jimi, music was taken to another level.

When the American expatriate James Marshall Hendrix made his triumphant return to the United States with ARE YOU EXPERIENCED?, he'd just smelted British pop psychedelia, R&B, Bob Dylan and Cream into a gleaming rock and roll alloy. Nothing quite looked or sounded like the musical melting pot that was the Jimi Hendrix Experience. Yet the American release of ARE YOU EXPERIENCED? differed from the British version in one significant respect: "Everybody was scared to relase `Red House' in America," Hendrix recalled, "because they said `America don't like blues, man!'" Yes, it's hard to believe, but the Experience's original rendition of Jimi's epic "Red House" (recorded in London on December 13, 1966) appears stateside ...

Recorded between March 1968 and August 1970. Includes liner notes by John McDermott. After years of legal wrangling, FIRST RAYS is the initial album released under the direct supervision of the Hendrix family. These remastered classics, previously found on the posthumous albums THE CRY OF LOVE, WAR HEROES and RAINBOW BRIDGE, were originally slated to be part of a double-album sequel to ELECTRIC LADYLAND, a concept that died with Hendrix in 1970. The compilation of these songs allows us to see the many sides of this innovative artist. Alongside runaway flights of fancy ("Stepping Stone") and overcharged ...

There are still plenty of powerful blues/rock-inflected songs, such as the menacing "If 6 Was 9," the rolling "Spanish Castle Magic" and the spatial title tune. But "Up From The Skies" is a jazzy trio romp, featuring Hendrix's bluesy, vocalized wah-wah pedal. And on the ballads "Little Wing" and "Castles Made Of Sand," Hendrix shifts the focus from the band to the silvery chord/melody accompaniments he often employed ...

This 1997 reissue of ARE YOU EXPERIENCED? is a remastered version that restores the original LP's track order and album artwork. ARE YOU EXPERIENCED? was previously reissued in 1993 (MCA 10893) with new cover art and a new 17-track running order that included all the songs on either the U.S. or U.K. versions of the original LP. That version is now out of print, and has been replaced by this one, on the Experience Hendrix label, which features remastered versions of the same 17 songs, this time in the order they appeared on the original American LP, with the extra tracks added to the end (a separate version was simultaneously released in the U.K., featuring the same songs but in the original British track order). The Experience Hendrix label is controlled by Hendrix's family. The 1997 reissue ...

Champian
Champian Fulton Champian CD  (2007)

Electric Ladyland songs
CD $16.49  Audio Samples
Singer/pianist Champian Fulton makes an impressive debut with David Berger and the Sultans of Swing in this collection of time-tested standards, many of which have unjustly fallen out of favor. Fulton is gifted with an expressive voice, clear diction, and a great sense of rhythm, while Berger's arrangements provide perfect accompaniment. "I Didn't Mean a Word I Said" is a laconic ballad, but Fulton injects a bit of sass into it, even though singing pretty close to the melody. It is refreshing to hear a singer sing show tunes with the verse intact, which set up a song, but are all too frequently omitted when performed outside the context of a musical. Her playful side comes through in the driving take of "Just One of Those Things," following trombonist Ryan Keberle's half chorus with a bit of Ella Fitzgerald-like scat. The band's loopy setup of "I Can't Give You Anything But Love" adds an old-fashioned male vocal chorus to back Fulton plus a few humorous asides to update the vintage lyrics, along with an amusing narrative by Matt Hong. Fulton delights in "Ain't Nobody Here But Us Chickens," a ...
