Digitally remastered by Erick Labson (MCA Media Studios, North Hollywood, California).

Mississippi born Riley B. King began playing music on the streets of his native Indianola in the '40s, eventually moving to Memphis to pursue a career as a bluesman. He found a home as a DJ on legendary Memphis radio Station WDIA in the early '50s, a position he used to further his budding reputation as a guitarist/singer to be reckoned with. His on-air moniker, "the Beale Street Blues Boy" ultimately metamorphosed into his stage name. He spent the '50s cementing his legend as an energetic performer, playing with Johnny Ace and Bobby "Blue" Bland and on his own. His very modern, urban style was influenced not only by T-Bone Walker, but by jazz guitarist Charlie Christian. King's gestalt was miles away from the blues' rural beginnings, relying on witty, sophisticated lyrics and almost jazzy rhythms. His signature guitar style, as played on his trademark Gibson hollow-body "Lucille," combined quick vibrato with cutting, single-note lines and aggressively bent notes. His boisterous vocals, entertainment-value showmanship and gregarious personality made him beloved not just to blues aficionados, but to the larger pop audience.

The high rating for this compilation of Chicago blues women comes not from its star power -- clearly Koko Taylor is missing, at the very least -- but for its sheer power and the consistent quality of its performances. Assembled as part of Delmark's 50th Anniversary celebration, Wild About That Thang contains 13 burning tracks from the marginal -- Mary Johnson with the Dixie Stompers in two previously unissued performances from 1955 -- to the legendary -- Dinah Washington from 1945, with a Delmark recording featuring Charles Mingus, Lucky Thompson, and Milt Jackson in the band -- and everything in ...

"Laura Moran is a hot poet at the top of her game. She is risking everything by sofa-surfing the USA -- seeing her is like taking the temperature of the Age."--Bob Holman, Bard Professor and editor of "United States of Poetry"."One of the most beautifully lyrical poets ever to bridge the space between page and stage."--Taylor Mali, national award winning poet, performer, educator."She is among the rarest practitioners of the poetic craft, a "poet's poet" who is also a magical stage presence. If one should wonder where the 'poetry' in 'performance poetry' has gone, one need look no further than the work of Laura Moran."-- Daniel Solis, national award winning poet."[She]...is a wordsmith of the highest caliber. Few poets in the country can ...
