Building from the jazz fusion foundation of Pretzel Logic, Steely Dan created an alluringly sophisticated album of jazzy pop with Katy Lied. With this record, Walter Becker and Donald Fagen began relying solely on studio musicians, which is evident from the immaculate sound of the album. Usually, such a studied recording method would drain the life out of each song, but that's not the case with Katy Lied, which actually benefits from the duo's perfectionist tendencies. Each song is given a glossy sheen, one that accentuates not only the stronger pop hooks, but also the precise technical skill of the professional musicians drafted to play the solos. Essentially, Katy Lied is a smoother version of Pretzel Logic, featuring the same cross-section of jazz-pop and blues-rock. The lack of innovations doesn't hurt the record, since the songs are uniformly brilliant. Less overtly cynical than previous Dan albums, the album still has its share of lyrical stingers, but what's really notable are the melodies, from the seductive jazzy soul of "Doctor Wu" and the lazy blues of "Chain Lightning" to the terse "Black Friday" and mock calypso of "Everyone's Gone to the Movies." It's another excellent record in one of the most distinguished rock & roll catalogs of the '70s. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine In 1975 after an extraordinarily successful run of releases which culminated in that "steely" masterpiece, PRETZEL LOGIC, the Dan shifted direction a bit and opened their music up on KATY LIED. The sound is warmer, the already sophisticated harmonies somewhat richer, a little bit closer to combo jazz. It's as if jazz pianist Bill Evans collaborated with Bob Dylan. KATY LIED contains Steely Dan's most emotional, even passionate music up to that point, matched only by the brilliant AJA a few years later. Donald Fagen's acerbic vocals forgoe the double tracking of the previous albums, the sarcasm melting into something close to vulnerability in a song like "Doctor Wu," maybe the greatest single tune Fagen and Becker ever wrote. KATY LIED is also notable for the appearance of vocalist Michael McDonald, whose grainy baritone blends particularly well with Fagen's unique sound.

Steely Dan Katy Lied Songs Katy Lied Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews The Dan at their cryptic best This album is a showcase for Fagen and Becker's intriguing and puzzling lyrics, and represents the Dan at their most sly and indirectly cynical (compared with their next, Royal Scam, which is much more direct in its attacks and sarcasm).
It is also a fine musical work too, and in my view far better than the overrated Pretzel Logic, which lacks overall coherence and lastability. 'Bad Sneakers' is one of the prototype Dan songs; lyrics that fascinate you forever and complex musical shifts that both unsettle and soothe. Perhaps the defining moment is reached with 'Katy Lied' - one of the Dan's most impenetrable songs lyrically "are you with me Dr Wu? are you really just a shadow ...?". As you listen to these songs, you find yourself wondering if this is good for your health, as they seep into your psyche and force you to see the world through Fagen and Becker's wonderfully twisted minds. But the music just drugs you into submission, and you give in.
One of their best. Should be in anyone's collection. Submitted by boris_boy (Brisbane, Australia) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 1 found this helpful.
Blast from the past I had not heard this CD for several years, and it blew me away. I had forgotten just how good it was. This is the one where they finally seemed to be getting it together as a band. This would be a very good addition to any onew collection of just plain great classics. Excellent! Submitted by CMNDCR (Jacksonville, FL, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Still The One! Steely Dan's hall of fame statis is secure, regardless of what I could say; however, this, the 1st I actually owned, does deserve special recognition. From the wonderfully unrelated cover to the great songs, it still awes me. Even though 'Black Friday', 'Bad Sneakers' and 'Dr. Woo' were top 40 hits and are now considered AOR radio classics, 'Daddy Don't Live In That New York City No More' reigns as one of my top 20 or 30 songs ever. 'Ya gotta luv da Dan. Man, were they good!" Submitted by St.Dvy (Windham, Me.) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Session This really started the recognition of session musicians. Michael McDonald, David Paich and drummer Jeff Porcaro are among the A-list of new generation of musicians. The late great Porcaro played on all tracks except "Any World" who was played by an original session drummer Hal Blaine. Submitted by Henry (Phil) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

$18.05 Two CDs of rare live performances by the kings of snotty, raw punk, recorded at CBGB's in San Francisco in '77 & '78. Almost none of this stuff has seen the light of day, and there's also a handful of extremely rare songs seldom performed live by the band: 'Death May Be Your Santa Claus','Dead Or Alive', 'Not Anymore', 'Flame Thrower Love'. Includes photos, liner notes and top quality mastering. 35 tracks. Double slimline jewelcase. 1998 Bomp Records release.
The Dead Boys: Stiv Bators (vocals); Jimmy Zero, Cheetah Chrome (guitar); Jeff Magnum (bass); Johnny Blitz (drums). Principally recorded live at CBGB's, New York, New York between April 7, 1977 and March 11, 1978. Includes liner notes by Arthur Alexander and Cheetah Chrome. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Dead Boys: Stiv Bators (vocals); Jimmy Zero, Cheetah Chrome (guitar); Jeff Magnum (bass guitar); Johnny Blitz (drums). In the late '70s, the Dead Boys became notorious for their rambunctious performances in the legendary New York City nightclub CBGB's. Sadly, there was only one official live album released by the band, a one-off reunion show from the early '80s titled Night of the Living Dead Boys, which contained more than a few overdubs (singer Stiv Bators had to re-record almost all his vocals). But the 1998 double CD/LP release All This And More corrects the problem once and for all. By combining a pair of Dead Boys/CBGB's shows (8/22/77 and 3/11/78) with ...
