Recorded between 1973 and 1977. Includes liner notes by Joseph Laredo.
This is part of MCA's 20th Century Masters: The Millennium Collection series.
This compilation, which compiles pretty much all of the group's best-known material, provides the casual fan an excellent entry point into the work of Lynyrd Skynyrd, the quintessential Southern rock band. While Skynyrd was fully capable of writing anthems for the unreconstructed South (the pro-Nixon, Neil Young-baiting "Sweet Home Alabama"), it often transcended the macho breast-beating of its peers. "Gimme Three Steps," for instance, finds the narrator studiously sidestepping a barroom brawl, while "Saturday Night Special" details a blatantly anti-gun stance, about as common in '70s Southern rock as drum machines and hair spray.
Skynyrd's undeniable mastery of Southern boogie is what keeps the whole thing moving. Of course, this collection ends with the ultimate power ballad and bane of cover bands worldwide, "Free Bird"; without this and "Stairway to Heaven," the "classic rock" radio format as we know it might never have existed.

A little disappointed in the playlist, but it was my fault for not checking before I bought it. Still, I like Lynrd Skynrd and I will buy more in the future Submitted by c7h7r7istina (Armpit, Michigan) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Let's Get Down To Business... This CD is everything I expected, Skynyrd at his best. However, I would buy it from elsewhere since CD Universe has demonstrated significant problems with satisfactory fulfillment of merchandise! Why only 10 tracks? Great overview of this southern rock powerhouse. However, I have a compaint about the companies putting these compolations together. Stop giving us a meger ten tracks. It makes me not want to buy them. And where is "Working For MCA"? Go back and put 15 or 16 tracks on this CD and I will buy it! I am a big Skynard fan! Almost Complete This CD contains just about everything that a casual fan would need, with two exceptions. Missing are the songs Tuesday's Gone (one of their best) and Simple Man.
What is here, though, is pure gold. From Sweet Home Alabama to Free Bird, almost all their essential tracks are provided. Submitted by johnmontgomery1 (Los Angeles, CA, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Rip Off havent we heard all this before......this is just another way of ripping off the music buying public.Yes the music content is superb and from a band with this talent we expect it......but `how many best` of or montage albums have there been since the demise of their key members there is even a tribute done by Skynrd themselves where the audience do more vocals than the band.....we dont need this when i am sure there are some unpublished rarities out there Submitted by GUITARMAN_kent_UK (England) Was This Review Helpful? 20th Century Masters - The Millennium Collection: The Best Of Lynyrd Skynyrd CD music
$19.59 Recorded between 1968 & 1971. Includes liner notes by Pete Townshend, John Atkins, and Chris Charlesworth.
Though Pete Townshend was originally unhappy with WHO'S NEXT, it was quickly welcomed by critics and fans, becoming one of the most celebrated titles in their enduring catalog. His frustrations boiled down to the album being a compromised version of a larger work he'd envisioned, LIFEHOUSE, which proved too unwieldy to be realized. Expanded to a two-disc set with essays by both Townshend and John Atkins, the original nine-song album is expanded with six additional studio tracks.
These include earlier versions of the album's songs and a cover of Holland-Dozier-Holland's "Baby Don't You Do It." Recorded in New York during the spring of 1971 in the midst of a fraying relationship with producer Kit Lambert, the early cuts clearly don't have the sonic breadth and wallop of what the Who achieved back in England later in the year, but are fascinating nonetheless. The second disc was recorded live before an invited audience, and was originally part of the album's grand plan. Mixing new material with covers ("Road Runner;" Mose Allison's "Young Man Blues") ...
