Lynyrd Skynyrd begins to show signs of wear on their fourth album, Gimme Back My Bullets. The band had switched producers, hiring Tom Dowd, the producer who served Atlantic's roster so well during the label's heyday. Unfortunately, he wasn't perfectly suited for Skynyrd, at least at this point in their history. The group had toured regularly since the release of their debut and it showed, not just in their performance, but in the songwriting of Ronnie Van Zant, who had been so consistent through their first three albums. Not to say that he was spent -- the title track was as defiant as "All I Can Do Is Write About It" was affecting, while "Searching" was a good ballad and "Double Trouble" was a good rocker. These songs, however, were surrounded by songs that leaned to the dull side of generic (unlike those on Nuthin' Fancy) and Dowd's production didn't inject energy into the group's performances. This doesn't mean Gimme Back My Bullets is a bad record, since the group was still in fairly good shape and they had some fine songs, but coming after three dynamite albums, it was undoubtedly a disappointment -- so much so that it still sounds like a disappointment years later, even though it's one of only a handful of records by the original band. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Perhaps Lynyrd Skynyrd's most underrated album, 1976's GIMME BACK MY BULLETS was another inspired and consisteMojo (Publisher) (p.118) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "Singer Ronnie Van Zant's dualities were neatly encapsulated in two of the new songs: 'Double Trouble'...and 'All I Can Do Is Write About It'..."

5 stars skynyrd band comes out swingin'!
released less than a year after the sudden departure of third guitarist ed king, this fourth offering from the boys delivers just as much punch as their first three albums did.the crunching title track opens the album followed by a cover of j.j. cale's "i got the same old blues" and the pounding rocker,"cry for the bad man".other highlights include the beautiful ballad "all i can do is write about it" and ronnie vanzant's personal nod to the "men thats dressed in blue","double trouble".

3 stars good effort but not their best....
if you like Skynyrd you'll like this as well..most noteworthy for the title track but other good cuts on it as well..it might pale in comparison to their first album or Sreet Survivors but this is still a strong rock album...

2 stars Poorly Produced
Skynyrd's fourth album and their first NOT produced by Al Kooper is a real letdown. Tom Dowd did a better job on the band's next two albums but this one seems as if he was just winging it. Out of the nine songs that appeared on the original version, only three come close to the greatness the band was capable of. Those tunes, "Searching", "Cry for the Bad Man" and the title track save this collection from being a total failure. I wouldn't recommend this record as a starting point for those not familiar with Lynyrd Skynyrd music. Try any of their first three or "Street Survivors".

5 stars Another Great Lynyrd Skynyrd Album
GIMME BACK MY BULLETS is yet another great Lynyrd Skynyrd album. The best songs here are the title track (which helped me through times when I wasn't feeling well), "Trust", "Cry For The Bad Man", and "Roll Gypsy Roll", but everything is great here except for the cover of J.J. Cale's "I've Got The Same Old Blues." If you get this album or any Skynyrd album, period, you really can't go wrong.

In 1981, Mike Segal was a promising pre-med student at the University of Texas at Austin. Unfortunately, being at the wrong place at the wrong time dramatically altered his life's dream. Mike and his girlfriend stopped at a convenience store to get some gas after a late night study session. He walked inside and found himself in the midst of an armed robbery. He was immediately escorted into the freezer, assaulted and then mercilessly shot execution-style, in the back of the head. The perpetrators believed that they had eliminated the sole witness for their crime, but Mike Segal survived. What they did kill was the promising career of a future surgeon. Still, they did not kill the spirit and determination of a man with a caring heart. After Mike's unfortunate ...

A Day to Remember plays post-hardcore with a distinctly pop-punk melodic stamp. They're as much influenced by Epitaph and Fat Wreck Chords bands as they are by punishingly rhythmic metalcore acts. Their third album, HOMESICK, is frequently soaring and anthemic, the choruses on songs like "NJ Legion Iced Tea" and "Have Faith In Me" sticking in the head almost immediately. They haven't abandoned roaring hardcore brawn, however, as steamroller tracks "Mr. Highway's Thinking About the End" and "Holdin' It Down for the Underground" amply display. The songs are balanced nicely, and the ratio of sweet and sour is just about right.
Ocala, FL-based post-hardcore outfit A Day to Remember's third full-length offering opens with the blistering "The Downfall of Us All," a hugely melodic slice of metal-infused punk-pop bliss that's sure to land a second life in countless montages on MTV reality shows and 30-second cola commercials. What follows is a collection of perfectly executed and fairly standard clean vocal post-hardcore emo-pop that both revels in and illuminates the limitations of the genre. While lead singer Jeremy McKinnon fulfills his duty as a clean/screamo switch-hitter throughout Homesick, the omnipresent group vocals provide the thread from which the album was designed. A Day to Remember do their best to juggle both worlds on the anthemic "Have Faith in Me," and the closing "If It Means a Lot to You" provides fans with a fine Bic lighter/cell phone light moment. ~ James Christopher Monger
