Personnel: Neil Diamond (vocals). Arranger: Lee Holdridge. First released in 1972, MOODS includes the hit recordings "Song Sung Blue" and "Play Me," as well as the country boogie of "Gitchy Goomy," the African-influenced "Walk on Water," and Diamond's perfectly realized orchestral mini-pop opus "Morningside," one of his most beautiful, if little-known, pieces. Moods finds Neil Diamond attempting to craft a more ambitious and substantial album than his usual pop record through heavy orchestration, but the results only work when he sticks to catchy pop-rock, as on "Song Sung Blue," "High Rolling Man," and "Play Me." ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine Moods Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) This one hits the mark. This was Diamonds followup to the " Taproot Manuscript" which marked the change away from the POP R&B genre and into his more reflective and philisophical writing style. He had three hits from this album with "Song Sung Blue", "Play me", and " Walk On Water". However, He makes a greater impact with many of the songs on the album that did'nt chart. May I suggest " Morningside", and "Canta Libre". It's nice to find that MCA has remastered many of Diamond's recordings from his years at the UNI label. This is a must have. One Of His Hidden Best You don't hear much about the MOODS album. But in my opion it is one Neil Diamonds most moving tributes to the emotional state of man. It's a combination of mans light and somber sides. MOODS should be brought out again for all to hear and experience. Submitted by a reviewer (Searsport, ME) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
