Their self-titled debut had been released two years earlier, but 1971's WHERE'S THE MONEY? launched Dan Hicks & His Hot Licks into their brief time in the spotlight. Few acts choose to offer up a live release so early in their career, but it was a wise move for this outfit. This set captures their jazzy charm and lilting nostalgia, as well as the sardonic wit of their leader.

Dan Hicks's songwriting influences are wide-ranging, drawing on Django Reinhardt's cabaret flair, Western swing, romantic pop, and more. He can be resonantly emotional as on "News From Up the Street" and "Is This My Happy Home?" and offhandedly casual as with "Traffic Jam," the title track, and "By Hook or By Crook." Warmly recorded, the interplay of the band is inviting and engaging, while the sound of an appreciative audience adds excitement without any intrusion or distraction.

Rolling Stone (11/11/71, p.56) - "...a genuine original, and one of the greatest superheroes in all of 20th-century popular music....a refreshing change of pace..."

5 stars Hot Songs from the Hot Licks
Great album by a great group. The fact that it is a live album makes it all the more interesting for their debut but they pull it off. Just try to listen to this without tapping your toes. Their time together as a group was all too short but left behind some great music to enjoy.

5 stars Unique
Been listening to Dan Hicks since late 60s and still loving his unique sound. Caught his act on Austin City Limits, great show with lots of energy and humor.

4 stars either you get it or you don't
Think live radio shows before television. A little swing, a little country, a little schmaltz. Bob Wills with less "twang". Very entertaining and fun but a lot of people just don't "get it"

Recorded between 1971 & 1973. Includes liner notes by Todd Everett. RETURN TO HICKSVILLE is an anthology celebrating Dan Hicks & His Hot Licks's slim but invitingly winning Blue Thumb releases. They had signed with Blue Thumb after their overlooked 1969 debut, their first label appearance being 1971's live WHERE'S THE MONEY? They released new studio recordings, STRIKING IT RICH and LAST TRAIN TO HICKSVILLE in each of the two successive years. By the time of the latter they knew they were disbanding, hence ...

Recorded between 1945 and 1964. Includes liner notes by Joseph Laredo. Digitally remastered by Doug Schwartz (Audio Mechanics, Los Angeles, California). MCA/Decca's full-priced 18-track Burl Ives collection Greatest Hits, released in 1996, was still in print when the label issued this 12-track budget set five years later, so it's worth comparing the two. The less-expensive album actually contains a couple of big hits -- Ives' Top 40 pop/Top Ten country cover of Hank Thompson's "Wild Side of Life" from 1952 and the 1962 single "Mary Ann Regrets," which went Top 40 pop and Top 20 country and easy listening -- not featured on the more expensive one. In fact, there is an overlap of only seven tracks between the two albums. On the whole, Greatest Hits is the preferable compilation, boasting roughly ...

Never Let Go: Live
Camel Never Let Go: Live CDs  (1993)

Where's The Money?
CD $23.25
Progressive rock bands like Camel have to be creative in their touring schedules, often traveling to Europe in order to find a substantial concentration of fans in a single place. So it was that Camel arrived with their 20th anniversary tour at Enschede, Holland. After their tenth anniversary tour (which found them promoting The Single Factor), few would have predicted a 20th, but the release of Dust and Dreams in 1991 suggested the band had found a second creative wind (or at least tapped into the original breeze last felt on Nude). Never Let Go confirms the point that Camel has plenty of life left in it. Spread out across two discs (the untangling of which is like disassembling a child's toy, a problem common to two-disc sets), this live show features two distinct sets. The first is a remarkable retelling of their earlier travels, recounting highlights from each of their releases up to Nude, in chronological order no less. It starts out deceptively simple, with Andrew Latimer strumming a slow version of "Never Let Go," which soon explodes into a spot-on rendition. With keyboardist Mickey Simmonds joining a returning Colin Bass and Paul Burgess, the new quartet does a marvelous job of capturing Camel in its various guises: from the instrumentals "Ice" and "Earthrise" to familiar songs like "Spirit of the Water" (sung by Bass) and "City Life." The second set is devoted to a pristine presentation of their recent opus, Dust and ...

Where's The Money?
CD $10.49  5 stars
This compilation of 20 recordings by popular British vocalist, Dusty Springfield, includes the hit "Will You Love Me Tomorrow." This 1964 album was the U.K. equivalent of the LP that Americans knew as I Only Want to Be with You -- as such, most of what was on there is embraced by the middle-late '90s reissue of that title. Polygram's British operation, however, ...
