Originally released in 1969, CAPTURED LIVE AT THE FORUM is from the early stages of Three Dog Night's career. While it's unusual to release a live album so soon after a group's debut, it was a wise decision. As good as Three Dog Night's singles were--and they were some of the finest AM radio staples of the era--they only hint at how powerful the group were live.
While leader Danny Hutton was a protege of Brian Wilson, lead singer Chuck Negron came from an R&B tradition, and that collision of pristine pop and gutbucket soul was the tension which drove the group. On CAPTURED LIVE AT THE FORUM, Negron is clearly in charge, with a rocking cover of the Band's "Chest Fever," and a version of the chestnut "Try a Little Tenderness" styled after Otis Redding's definitive reading, nearly outshining the often-excellent renditions of Three Dog Night hits like Harry Nilsson's "One" and Laura Nyro's "Eli's Coming."

The concert, although short (37-38 minutes) highlights many of the group's early hits, along with a couple of great covers. The energy shown by the group and the fans is obvious, and although the technology in recording was nowhere near what it is today, you can still tell that at that time Three Dog Night was on the top of its game. 3 Dog Night - 3 Short Decades Captured Live at the Forum was one of the most popular party albums of 1969. The sound is 1969 technology however the CD primarily captures the memories of those days. The tunes on this CD were great, are still great and form the basis of any Best of Three Dog Night collection. "$5.50 tickets at the front" boy, those were the days! I haven't been able to stop listening to this! since I came across this album, I've listened to it every day and I'm still not sick of it! They totally rock on the three-part harmonies on "It's For You" and "Chest Fever" has a really great intro. all around, this album is a total jam. I wish I was alive when they were captured live at the forum! Submitted by chrissy m. (sarasota, fl) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

$8.99 In the three years since their debut, San Francisco's Call and Response have grown up. Their first record was a glittery, sometimes goofy indie pop confection that only sometimes dipped into melancholy waters. Winds Take No Shape is neck-deep in melancholy from the sad chord progressions to the low-key vocal harmonies to the restrained tempos. There are no songs about roller skating or blowin' bubbles here; the mood is very adult and very introspective. The instrumentation is subdued, too -- less bubbly synths and more sweeping organs, less bounce and more pout. They even bring in acoustic guitars on some of the songs, like the quietly epic "Misty Moon." Before you lament the loss of the perky, happy Call and Response, realize that the band does melancholy extremely well. It may take a spin or two to get used to the new deeper feeling, but once you do it is hard not to be blown away by the power of the songs. Simone Rubi's vocals are well suited to sadness, and the band is never anything less than completely sympathetic. Subtlety is the key, and they manage it without being boring. It would have been nice to lift the haze with an ...
