(1 Customer Review)
Sleepwalk is slightly better than Strikes Twice thanks in part to the absence of Larry Carlton's toneless singing. "Last Nite" and "10:00 P.M." have become staples in Carlton's live set. The legendary Carlton feel is evident throughout this session, but "Blues Bird" stands as the high-water mark. "Sleepwalk" is played beautifully, almost preventing the listener from noticing the sap-heavy strings in the background. Carlton's faceless rhythm section does little to enhance the music (as is usually the case with his solo efforts), but his playing more than makes up for this. Despite sounding a bit dated, this is still worth exploring, especially for guitarists. ~ Robert Taylor

$12.15 As so much Irish music loses its Irishness in the morass called Celtic, and as the urge to play faster and faster seems to be the norm, Providence offers a breath of fresh air. Their largely traditional repertoire isn't played at the speed of sound. Instead, by keeping the tempos reasonable, they offer a wonderful intertwining of fiddle, flute, and accordion that weaves a glorious tapestry of sound, as on "The Providence Reel/Roscommon Reel/Fred Finn's." It's a delight for the ear, with constant invention and a remarkable empathy between the musicians. The real joy is that they're equally good on songs, possessing one of the loveliest voices to come out of Ireland in many years with Joan McDermott, who can bring an ache to "Will Ye Go to Flanders?" and a rare joy to the happy ending of "The Jolly Young Ploughboy." Supremely confident in their individual skills, the bandmembers have no need to display them flashily, letting everything they do be in service of the tune, whether it's the sprightly hornpipes of "The Curlew Hills/Fr. Dollard's" or the graceful air of "McDonagh's." And to prove it's not a studio fluke, the last track is a live recording (made at the Scottish bar owned by Dougie Maclean) that's every bit as powerful and controlled as the rest. With this sophomore effort, Providence prove themselves to truly be the heirs of the Bothy Band and Planxty. ~ Chris Nickson
What's old - traditional Irish music - becomes timeless in the hands of Providence, a Dublin-based quintet that brings a passion for authenticity to its first Appleseed Recordings release, "A Fig for a Kiss." With material drawn from more than three centuries and skills honed through years of apprenticeship in other groups, the members of Providence combine fresh energy and a historical approach to a genre too frequently modernized. "Over the last few years, a lot of bands who are billed as 'Irish traditional bands' are hardly playing a traditional repertoire at all," explains Joan McDermott, lead ...

$12.99 This Canadian TV personality and musician came to fame as the host of SPORTS CAR REVOLUTION, a popular TV show about hot rods. His second album is high-octane rock with a hip-hop edge, including the infectious, heartfelt "Ordinary," the rapid-fire "Fueled By Adrenaline," and the searing "Bury Me Alive."
Mark Kasprzyk (aka Kazzer) grew up in small town Ontario, from a working class family. His youth was spent focused on his two passions - music, and the martial art of judo. While passing his days writing songs and performing with local Hamilton bands, he simultaneously trained and became so skilled in the sport that he became four-time Canadian National Judo Team member and an alternate for the 2000 Olympics. The physical agility and focus he obtained training in the martial art would later become a signature element of his live performances, word got around and his performances were packing them in, leading to a deal in 2002 with Epic Records. Kazzer's first single for Epic, "Pedal to the Metal", from his debut album "Go For Broke" was an international success. Not only was the track at the top of radio playlists, it was featured in the key car chase scene of the Hollywood blockbuster "The Italian Job", as well as the Fox movie "Catch that Girl". It has also been featured all over television broadcasts, including The Olympics, Grey Cup, and the sitcom "Malcolm in the Middle". "Pedal to the Metal" is also the theme song for "Sports Car Revolution" on the Speed Channel, hosted by none other than the man himself, Kazzer. Epic Records in New York went through an executive change, and Kazzer found himself without the A&R rep or label President who signed him - allowing him to move to Linus/Universal Canada and record his second album with his creative control and rep intact, and a fan base to build on.He set to work on his second album. "Broke" was recorded in 2004 and early 2005, co-produced by Kazzer and Ashton Price, and mixed by Dan Brodbeck. "I ...
