A series of answering machine messages over a funky drum beat does not fail, even though most callers insist on saying 'peace' instead of 'goodbye' at the end of every call. The artist first appears on track two, and stays in control throughout an album of high-quality urban R&B/soul. Highly commercial, yet it never sinks to the blandness of some other 90s female pop acts. Tracks such as 'Real Love' lend more to the best of Aretha Franklin pop flirtations than to 90s R&B. Blige is Aretha's heir apparent.

The immediate success of her triple-platinum debut WHAT'S THE 411? put Mary J. Blige in a singular class as a soul-hop visionary, and opened the door for other hip-hop-influenced R&B acts. Yet as the follow-up approached, the nature of her talent began to be questioned, and the strength of her debut became an obstacle.
If Blige heard all those rumors, she must've decided that musical revenge is the best payback of all. Thus, MY LIFE comes across as another ground-breaking venture, linking R&B's new and old schools, filling the airwaves with delightful harmonies AND hip-hop samples. From P Diddy to Lenny Kravitz, a plethora of producers and guest stars graces this updated, remix-added version of Mary J. Blige's 2001 NO MORE DRAMA, a situation usually signaling a dearth of creativity on behalf of the featured artist. Fortunately that's not the case here. Blige is fully in control, from a lyrical reworking of the '70s Al Green classic "Simply Beautiful" entitled "PMS," which could well become an anthem for women suffering from those disabling symptoms, to the Dr. Dre-produced "Family Affair," in which this classic R&B singer self-confidently modernizes her image for the J-Lo generation.
"He Think I Don't Know" is vintage Blige, her roots firmly in late-'70s deep soul, while the autobiographical "Where I've Been" features Eve paying homage to a woman who's struggled through poverty and drug addiction and come out the other side a stronger person. This is a masterful effort that finds Mary J. Blige successfully updating her sound while retaining the musical depth that got her where she is today.
Listeners of Mary J. Blige's seasoned and confident fifth studio release will have zero problems remembering the album's title, No More Drama. An urban-sounding vocal sample that sings, "Mary J. Blige, no more drama," plays throughout the length of the 17-track disc. This very well may be the first time such a tactic has been used in contemporary music; generally a vocal sample repeats throughout the course of only one song, but because the fare on No More Drama is so good, this recurring vocal sample is as subtle and congruent as a consistent drum hit. Blige has come a long way since 1992's breakthrough, What's the 411?, and that's made very clear on this solid disc. $17.15 After the demise of the Albion Country Band, Ashley Hutchings joined his wife Shirley Collins in the Sussex-based Etchingham Steam Band. Thanks largely to the MORRIS ON project, English country dance was then enjoying something of a renaissance. As the band started to play further afield and to larger audiences, so the pool of musicians involved expanded and the need for amplification grew. Keen to combine English country dance with a rock rhythm section, Hutchings raised the Albion standard anew in 1975. Retaining Collins, Simon Nicol, Dave Mattacks and Eddie Upton from the Etchingham pool, Hutchings recruited new musicians including John Tams, Graeme Taylor and early music authority Phil Pickett to create the Albion Dance Band.
As THE PROSPECT BEFORE US from 1976 amply proves, they played a muscular version of dance music with extraordinary diversity, taking in traditional material from Sussex and Kent plus 17th century composers like Adson and Purcell. Several vocalists were included as well. Some tracks were recorded at folk dances held in the studio; these capture the excitement of a country dance, with the calling of steps and clapping of hands audible over the music. $17.75 The Reflections of David McWilliams differs from RPM's previous McWilliams anthology, The Days of David McWilliams, as it's a career-spanning collection, rather than focusing exclusively on his late-'60s work for the Major Minor label. Wisely, too, there's no repetition of tracks between the volumes, although about half of Reflections of David McWilliams is taken from 1966-1969 releases (including his 1966 debut single, "God and My Country"/"Blue Eyes"). The same comments and criticisms, however, that held true of the work on Reflections of David McWilliams also apply here. McWilliams' brand of pop/rock-folk is at times a little reminiscent of Donovan's, but far more lightweight, and without nearly as strong a vocal personality. Protest folk-pop is heard on "God and My Country," but usually he opted for more gentle, introspective, romantic singer/songwriting with orchestration that could lean toward the fruity (and, on "Turn Homeward Stranger," strongly recall recordings of the period by Bob Lind). The 1977-1984 era, represented by six tracks (his albums for Dawn in 1972-1974 aren't sampled), finds his compositional style unchanged but his production becoming more in tune with later singer/songwriter trends, and for the most part blander. (Incidentally, whether the flaw is in the original recording or the transfer, the sole 1984 track, "Wounded," sounds afflicted by tape varispeed.) For the small band of David McWilliams fans who have most or all of his work already, the big bonus is the addition of five previously unreleased home demos from 1972, originally submitted as songs to be considered for his album The Beggar & the Priest. Of these, "Nana Get Up and Get Out of This Place" was redone for his The Beggar & the Priest LP, but the other four were not on McWilliams' other releases (though a poem of "The Beggar and the Priest" appeared on the album of the same name). These are acoustic performances with minimal percussion, which works to the earnest, folky tunes' benefit, although the fidelity is a little below par. ~ Richie Unterberger
