The James Gang's debut LP, Yer' Album, was very much a first record and very much a record of its time. The heavy rock scene of the period was given to extensive jamming, and four tracks ran more than six minutes each. The group had written some material, but they were still something of a cover band, and the disc included their extended workouts on Buffalo Springfield's "Bluebird" and the Yardbirds' "Lost Woman," the latter a nine-minute version complete with lengthy guitar, bass, and drum solos. But in addition to the blues rock there were also touches of pop and progressive rock, mostly from Walsh who displayed a nascent sense of melody, not to mention some of the taste for being a cutup that he would display in his solo career. Walsh's "Take a Look Around" must have made an impression on Pete Townshend during the period before the album's release when the James Gang was opening for the Who since Townshend borrowed it for the music he was writing for the abortive Lifehouse follow-up to Tommy. If "Wrapcity (i.e., Rhapsody) in English," a minute-long piano and strings interlude, seems incongruous in retrospect, recall that this was an eclectic era. But the otherwise promising "Fred," which followed, broke down into a pedestrian jazz routine, suggesting that the band was trying to cram too many influences onto one record and sometimes into one song. Nevertheless, they were talented improvisers, as the open-ended album closer, Jerry Ragavoy and Mort Shuman's "Stop," made clear. After ten minutes, Szymczyk faded the track out, but Walsh was still going strong. Yer' Album contained much to suggest that the James Gang, in particular its guitarist, had a great future, even if it was more an album of performances than compositions. ~ William Ruhlmann

James Gang Yer' Album Songs Yer' Album Music Review Average Rating: (4.5 out of 5 stars) What can I tell you? This is the James Gang! I do not have to call the group Joe Walsh and the James Gang because the whole band was great. Submitted by byronblanchard (Anoka, Mn,USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
great debut, for pioneering American power trio Great Debut by pioneering American heavy metal power trio, The James Gang. Being from 1969, it is a little more psychedelic than the rest of the Joe Walsh period albums the band put out, but it still packed a big rock punch. It showed that even early on, the band experimented with "light" and "heavy" types of songs, and used some interesting songs for cover material (using the Yardbirds "Lost Woman" and Buffalo Springfield's "Bluebird", shows both ends of the spectrum, in their choice of covers.)A great first album, and probably only second best in their overall catalog to the legendary "Rides Again" album. $13.15 Jebu; "Filthy is all right."Jed Keipp, vocalist-guitarist for the groovalicious trio Jebu, is extolling the virtues of filth, with regard to music. He equates filth to reality, says it makes the music more interesting. He's right. When you wanna get down, you don't wanna do it to permanent-pressed, perfectly coifed Harry Connick Jr.-you want some greasy enough to move the booty. Take James Brown: He may be sharply dressed, but he's funky-and not just in the rhythmic (or olfactory) sense. "You got to have some dirt in the music [in order to] to have a sound," says Keipp, who also goes by Jebu (a nickname given to him by his drummer). "The filth is like honesty. Music is made to woo people and get them excited; honesty, something they can relate to, keeps things rolling."So has been the rallying cry of Jebu since its inaugural year of 2000. Keipp had made rounds as a drummer with James Shook & the Resolutions, Ogden jazzer Joe McQueen, guitarist Mike Christianson and his former band, Inside Green, but what he had in experience he lacked in fulfillment. Hence, Jebu materialized on a "hazy desert trip" to Goblin Valley as a means to make sense of Keipp's myriad musical interests (Paul Simon to Hendrix to James Brown to the Police) and satisfy a desire to hold both songs and chops at a premium. Quoted from The Salt Lake City Weekly. Written by Randy Harward Why this name?Jebu was a nickname given to Jed by Darren. Inspired by the Goblin Valley Desert heat and African music. Band History:Jebu, aka Jed Keipp. Born in Iowa City, Iowa, Jed grew up on the sounds of jazz and soul music. He scribbles out the songs for the band as ...
