By virtue of containing "Funk #49," if for no other reason, RIDES AGAIN, the second album from Cleveland rockers the James Gang, was one of the templates for '70s American blues/boogie rock. While there's no denying that cuts like the aforementioned iconic riff monster and the driving "Woman" are full of long-haired, shirtless, amps-on-11 abandon, there are a number of acoustic-based moments on the album as well, making it plain that neither singer/guitarist Joe Walsh, nor the rest of the James Gang, were one-trick ponies. The folky fingerpicking of "Ashes, the Rain and I" and the easygoing strum of "There I Go Again" provide a nice contrast to the band's harder-edged tunes.
With their second album Rides Again, the James Gang came into their own. Under the direction of guitarist Joe Walsh, the group -- now featuring bassist Dale Peters -- began incorporating keyboards into their hard rock, which helped open up their musical horizons. For much of the first side of Rides Again, the group tear through a bunch of boogie numbers, most notably the heavy groove of "Funk #49." On the second side, the James Gang departs from their trademark sound, adding keyboard flourishes and elements of country-rock to their hard rock. Walsh's songwriting had improved, giving the band solid support for their stylistic experiments. What ties the two sides of the record together is the strength of the band's musicianship, which burns brightly and powerfully on the hardest rockers, as well as on the sensitive ballads. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

5 stars Joe Walsh fans will love this!
It's great to know and to hear that this CD is true from it's original vinyl pressing, that is it contains "Bolero" in the medley of "The Bomber". In the early years of Album Oriented Rock radio here in San Antonio, I heard many a selection from this album and knew it would be part of my brothers and my record collection. Joe Walsh's guitar tone, electric and acoustic is classic, and very nice Hammond organ work on "Tend My Garden"..Rusty Young of Poco adds some fabulous pedal steel guitar. From gut wrenching rock'n'roll to the classically inspired "Ashes The Rain And I", if you owned the vinyl you need to get this CD! At first I was going to give this one 4 stars but what the heck..5 bright ones, y'all.

5 stars Simply Incredible - A Classic - Legendary
There are not very many "remastered" albums I know of that can LITERALLY TRANSPORT you back in time to the days and the places where you first heard the original music. Trust me - "Rides Again" will beam you back instantly to your days of youth. The remastering is flawless and even more importantly it is COMPLETE in that this version picks up the nuances such as "BOLERO" that may have escaped other attempts on other versions of James Gang compilations. Us "more mature" listeners will relish the time travel. Younger listeners will find a new genre in Joe and the Gang as they listen to this group who were WAY ahead of their time...and VERY welcome back here in the future. PS...I saw them LIVE last week in a "Rides Again" tour in the Dallas area - as Joe Walsh would say "my geese are still bumping". Simply Incredible.

The Smoker You Drink, The Player You Get, Walsh's second solo studio album, continues the heavy and light rock mix of tracks found on his previous release Barnstorm. Indeed, the opening two tracks bear this out. The first, perhaps Joe Walsh's most recognized track, "Rocky Mountain Way", comes replete with overly distorted guitars and the obligatory solo. The next song, "Bookends", is a tuneful ode to happy memories. Walsh's ability to swing wildly from one end of the rock scale to the other is unparalleled and makes for ...
