THE BEST OF THE BLACK PRESIDENT is simply a stellar collection that bests any two-disc collection out there as it represents the continued evolution of Fela Kuti's music from the 1960s through the 1990s. Compiled by son Femi, many tracks are edits of the originals -- "Gentleman," "Water Get No Enemy," "O.D.O.O." -- whose power is not reduced. Still others are second-halfs -- like "ITT," "Coffin for Head of State," "No Agreement," "Army Arrangement," and "Shuffering and Schmiling." Still others, such as "Zombie," "Sorrow Tears and Blood," "Shakara" and "Roforofo Fight," are presented in their original form. The track lineup is stellar; the sound has been completely remastered from the Fela reissue series sponsored by Barclay in France. There are also two fine liner essays from Jacqueline Grandchamp-Thiam and Rikki Stein (his friend and manager for the past 15 years of his life).
Fela Kuti is generally considered to be the inventor of Afrobeat, a propulsive, highly danceable music that borrows from American soul, R&B, funk, and jazz, but is deeply rooted in traditional African folk as well. This superior, two-disc compilation collects material from across the Nigerian performer's stunning career, beginning with a handful of recordings from 1972 and continuing up to 1989. Funky, passionate, and technically precise, yet free-spirited and given to extensive improvisation, Fela's music runs on webs of percolating percussion, bobbing bass, wiry funk guitar, cacophonous and sultry horns, and call-and-response choruses.
In addition to being a musical visionary, composer, and multi-instrumentalist, Fela was also a fiercely political figure. A socialist and revolutionary, Fela protested oppression in all its forms, touching on everything from police brutality to Pan-African identity, and THE BEST BEST provides a sampler of these themes. The only drawback here is that some tracks have been edited down to fit the compilation (Fela's jams could last upwards of 20 minutes). For this reason, dedicated fans may want to seek out the original albums. Still, THE BEST BEST is nearly unbeatable as an introduction to the irresistible power of this world-music icon.
Two CD compilation from the Nigerian musician who single-handidly invented Afro-Beat and created some of the most innovative music of it's time, all of which is still vital and fresh today. 13 tracks spanning the years 1972-89, this intelligently compiled collection of Worldbeat is the perfect introduction and reminder of what a great artist Fela Kuti was. Universal.

Best Best Of Fela Kuti
$11.39 The deluxe, two-disc version of the Junior Boys' hit 2006 album contains remixes by Hot Chip, Carl Craig, Morgan Geist, and Kode 9, as well as live tracks.
While Junior Boys' debut indie sleeper LAST EXIT leaned more toward pastiche--a product of influences as far afield as 2-step garage and Timbaland's stutter-funk--their sophomore effort, SO THIS IS GOODBYE, is a step toward pop song form (albeit of the slowly unfurling, epic variety). Junior Boys recast the notion of northern soul in terms of blue-eyed crooners born of icy Canadian winters, as opposed to the inner-city blues of the American rustbelt. Jeremy Greenspan's weightlessly gorgeous voice contrasts with the music's frigid, prickly synth arpeggiation--extending like icicles from aerated frozen tundra. Steeped in elegant melodies and artful textures, Junior Boys remodel new romantic pop as etherealized neo-soul.
So This Is Goodbye involves no input and no apparent residual fingerprints from original member Johnny Dark. On their second album, Jeremy Greenspan and Matt Didemus depart completely from 2-step and late-'90s Timbaland twitter, polishing their sound to such an extent that absolutely no detectable scuffs are left. Improbably enough, the thematic springboard for the album appears to be "When ...

Best Best Of Fela Kuti
$6.69 In the summer of 2005, a group of individuals came together in a small apartment in Hollywood with the purpose of forming a band. Each of these individuals, though differing in background, race, culture or creed, shared one overriding similarity: a love and appreciation for music. At this apartment, these persons were either armed with a musical instrument or a microphone, partaking in a jam session which would become the beginning of the formation of DDL Roundhouse. DDL Roundhouse is an 8 person Los Angeles-based hip hop live band whose music conveys each of its individuals’ personalities and passions, invoking many musical stylings such as hip hop, rock, blues, funk and jazz. Its combination of multiple genres to form its own blend of MJ (musical jenius) is evident in every song. Each track is the band’s appreciation ...
