Midtown Memphis Rhythm Section: Antoine Salley, O. Wahington, Night Train Clemons, Madison Cooper (percussion).
Digitally remastered by Suha Gur (Universal Music Studios, Edison, New Jersey).
Throughout the '80s, Robert Cray and Stevie Ray Vaughan were heralded as the "new hopes" for the blues. Although Vaughan's fiery blues-based playing made this sobriquet more appropriate, Cray's style took as much from Memphis soul as it did Chicago blues. HEAVY PICKS compiles the cream of Cray's material released between 1980 and 1997.
Combining a fluid guitar sound and a creamy vocal style, Robert Cray wrote music often based on the fragility of relationships between men and women. His high-caliber songwriting not only found Cray being covered by the likes of Albert King ("Phone Booth") and Eric Clapton ("Bad Influence"), but also landed him in the Top 40 ("Smoking Gun"). Although covers of Willie Dixon ("Too Many Cooks") and Otis Redding ("Trick or Treat") bridged the blues and soul divide, Cray's R&B strengths leapt out more in his collaborations with the Memphis Horns. On songs such as "Consequences," "Forecast (Calls for Pain)," and "I Guess I Showed Her," Cray's singing not only channels the influence of soul legend O.V. Wright, but his crisp guitar playing also points to Steve Cropper's Stax/Volt legacy.

Heavy Picks: The Robert Cray Band Collection album
$18.05 Now hear this -- all of Earl Bostic's earliest recordings as a leader are available in chronological succession on the Classics label. This man was a formidable alto saxophone virtuoso, respected by Charlie Parker and revered by John Coltrane. He also wrote arrangements for Gene Krupa, Artie Shaw, Paul Whiteman, and Louis Prima. When Bostic sat in on a Victor recording date with Lionel Hampton in October of 1939 and made 20 hot sides with Hot Lips Page in 1944, 1945, and 1946, he paved the way for his own exciting and lucrative career as a star in what would soon be called the R&B market. The 13-piece big band he assembled for his recording debut as a leader during the last weeks of 1945 included guitarist Tiny Grimes, trumpeter Benny Harris, swing trombonist Benny Morton, clarinetist Eddie Barefield, and both Don Byas and Walter "Foots" Thomas on tenor saxophones. Four titles from this session appeared on the Majestic label. "The Man I Love" begins as a lush ballad, accelerating to a mad pace as Bostic demonstrates his somewhat ferocious dexterity. During the years 1946-1948, Bostic made more than 30 sides for Gotham Records. Each of these bore the company's handsome logo, with a linear big-city skyline pictured on the label. Bostic's octet during 1946 had Tony Scott playing the clarinet and the mighty John Hardee blowing tenor sax, and featured guitar ace Jimmy Shirley. While jazz standards like "Liza" and "Where or When" were always an essential ingredient in Bostic's repertoire, danceable party music based on the blues quickly became his one-way ticket to popularity. ...

Heavy Picks: The Robert Cray Band Collection CD music
$13.45 In 1975, Humble Pie came sputtering to a halt after a series of less than inspiring albums. Surprisingly, frontman Steve Marriott's first solo album after the split, 1976's Marriott, is a sprightly, rollicking affair that is light on the blues-rock of Humble Pie and heavy on soul, funk, and hard-charging rock & roll. The album is divided into a British side (recorded by Marriott's band that included ex-T. Rex guitarist Mickey Finn) and an American side (with backing by a raft of West Coast session players including Michael Nesmith sidekick Red Rhodes on pedal steel). The British side is a rocked-out blast of noise with Marriott's wailing vocals sounding rejuvenated and his live-wire guitar playing fully to the front. Tracks like "East Side Struttin'," "Lookin' for a Love," ...
