Though only Steppewolf's third release in two years, 1969's AT YOUR BIRTHDAY PARTY isn't as flawless and inspired as the band's two previous recordings. But the album still packed quite a wallop and spawned yet another rock-radio standard, "Rock Me." One of the band's more underrated albums, even among longtime fans, AT YOUR BIRTHDAY PARTY contains typical Steppenwolf rockers like the aforementioned "Rock Me," "Jupiter Child," and "It's Never too Late." The experimental space rocker "Mango Juice" is comparable to Syd Barrett-era Pink Floyd. Soon after AT YOUR BIRTHDAY PARTY, Steppenwolf's lineup began to resemble a game of musical chairs. Band members came and went, with founder/leader John Kay remaining the only constant member.
Live Recording At Your Birthday Party Music Steppenwolf At Your Birthday Party Songs At Your Birthday Party Music Review Average Rating: (3.7 out of 5 stars) Good Album, but I prefer first, second, four Third album for Steppenwolf, recorded in 1969. This album is a bridge between The Second Album (1968) and Monster (1970). Is a very good album, with very good songs like Chicken wolf, Cat killer, Rock me and the classic It´s never too late. A good album but not compare to the first, the second or monster. My honest opinion: you can buy it, very nice price for a good album Submitted by wjoalh15 (Mérida, Venezuela) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
The Third in Rapid Succession Slightly better sound quality than the second but neither the second or this one compare to the first. Musicianship slips a little here as well, (timing problems), but after this album the original lineup starts to be replaced. Again, like the second album, we hear an alternate vocalist and like I stated in my review of the second album, I think this was a mistake. Still, there are some interesting tracks and for me the album experience is better with diversity in song style and production, but John Kay's vocal sound is Steppenwolf. I, however, believe in ten tracks that are all excellent vs. more tracks for your money.
Re-mastering and trimming to ten songs would make this a winner, but buy it anyway! Submitted by rumbarecords (Billings, MT. USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Don't miss being "AT YOUR BIRTHDAY PARTY" This quite jem from Steppenwolf collection opens with,"Don't Cry" a typical rocker from the band that making a surprise unknown hit.
True to form, John Kay belts out more political songs with "Chicken Wolf" and "God Fearing Man", a must for 60's generation children. Included in this album are 2 mood music instrumentals, a jazzy "Cat Killer" and relaxing "Mango Juice". For the ladies there is to lovely ballads of "Lonely Meter" and "She'll Be Better" sangs with sincerely. Then there are the true to form classic hits from the band, "It's Never Too Late", "Rock Me", "Jupiter Child" which still sound fresh on the album they were meant to be on. Finally is song title of "Happy Birthday", it is welcome change from another band fast rocker. This tune has the well meaningful lyics for someone special in your life. The only thing lacking is cover art from the original album, thus giving this a great price that can't be beat. Submitted by a reviewer (Lake Charles,LA, U.S. of A.) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

At Your Birthday Party
$4.99 1970's SEVEN, the mysteriously titled fifth Steppenwolf album overall, sees the group's return to the good-old heavy metal direction. 1969's MONSTER, an album that explored more serious social topics, proved to be an experimental side-step.
Steppenwolf gets back to basics on such Spinal Tap-esque titles as the funk rocker "Ball Crusher" and the instrumental "Earschplittenloudenboomer." With "Snowblind Friend," the band revisits the cautionary drug tale originally laid down in their '60s anthem "The Pusher." The most lyrically ...

At Your Birthday Party
$6.39 Steppenwolf may have enjoyed a string of hit singles ("Born to Be Wild," "Magic Carpet Ride") and albums (STEPPENWOLF, THE SECOND) in the late '60s/early '70s, but it was the band's live show that really made it one of the era's top rock acts. 1971's LIVE STEPPENWOLF captures the band at its in-concert peak, packing 13 Steppenwolf classics onto a single CD and focusing almost entirely on the band's best compositions. ...

At Your Birthday Party
$6.55 The beginnings of heavy metal can be pinpointed to a single song, Steppenwolf's biker classic "Born to Be Wild," featured on this classic self-titled 1968 debut. Originally from Canada, Steppenwolf exploded out of the West Coast, led by singer/guitarist John Kay. The band took the blues rock of Cream and cranking the volume a few notches higher to create its own style.
There's more to Steppenwolf's great debut than just the aforementioned "Wild" rock standard. There's a fun tribute to Chuck Berry in "Berry Rides Again," the sexually-charged "Sookie Sookie," and the anti-drug statement "The Pusher" (later covered by Blind Melon in the ...

Buffalo Bop has been releasing obscure rockabilly compilations for what seems like forever, and Rockin' Orbit is a fine thematic entry in the series. It's all basic variations on the tried and true rockabilly blueprint, but given that these were all recorded in the '50s, the dawn of the "Space Age", you also get lots of countdowns (to lift-off, presumably), lots of outer space sound effects, and at times, enough reverb to drown a cat. Sometimes, the connection to outer space is a bit of a stretch, but the imagined view of the future from the '50s is always good for ...
