| | Tennessee Christmas CD Various Artists :
Tennessee Christmas features ten country music artists performing holiday favorites. Some of the better-known performers include Reba McEntire ("Away in a Manger"), Loretta Lynn ("First Noel"), Brenda Lee ("Christmas Song"), the Oak Ridge Boys ("Christmas Is Paintin' the Town"), and Barbara Mandrell ("Winter Wonderland"). Furthermore, though he's not often considered a country artist, Jimmy Buffett offers a performance of "Christmas in the Caribbean," a song that is pleasing yet awfully out of place on an album titled Tennessee Christmas. Overall, however, those who admire country music, particularly the aforementioned artists, should find this collection a pleasant listen. ~ Jason Birchmeier
Producers: Tony Brown, Ron Chancey, Tom Collins.

| | Johnny Cash At Folsom Prison CD (1968)
Tennessee Christmas music CDs
$6.25 This is a multi-channel Super Audio CD playable only in Super Audio CD players.
Recorded live at Folsom Prison, Folsom, California on January 13, 1968. Includes liner notes by Johnny Cash and Steve Earle.
Want to hear part of the reason why Johnny Cash is an icon, a singer respected and influential in country, folk, and rock & roll? THIS is it! In 1968--one of the most tumultuous years in American history since the Depression years--Cash recorded an album live in front of a (literally) captive (but wildly appreciative) audience, in Folsom Prison. With two guitars, bass, drums, and a small vocal group (including Cash's wife June Carter Cash and the Statler Brothers), Cash sings his hits and lesser-known songs ("Send a Picture of Mother") and some haunting country standards ("Dark as a Dungeon"), as well as songs about REAL outlaws ("Cocaine Blues") to a rapt audience that hangs on every word. That boom-chicka-boom sound is sharp ...

| | Byron Berline Fiddle & A Song CD (1995)
Tennessee Christmas music CDs
$9.55 FIDDLE & A SONG features Byron Berline performing with a variety of singers and with the bands California, Sundance, The Doo Wah Riders and The Sherman Oaks Presbyterian Church Quartet. Berline is a member of both California and Sundance.
Principally recorded at Rainbow Garage, Van Nuys, California; Champagne Studios, Nashville, Tennessee; Don Ross Studio, Eugene, Oregon between November 8, 1994 and February 6, 1995. "Fiddler's Dream" was recorded in 1983. Includes liner notes by Byron Berline.
FIDDLE & A SONG was nominated for a 1996 Grammy Award for Best Bluegrass Album. "Sally Goodin" was nominated for Best Country Instrumental Performance.
Byron Berline's Fiddle & a Song is a star-studded affair with numerous guests, for the most part recorded in 1995. It's hard to beat "Sally Goodin," a traditional bluegrass favorite, with veterans Bill Monroe and Earl Scruggs prominently featured. But there are other worthwhile tracks as well; ex-Sundance member Vince Gill sings lead and plays guitar on "Rose of Old Kentucky" and "Sweet Memory Waltz," while Mason Williams wrote "Skippin' Along on Top" in honor of Berline and sings lead in this humorous ditty as well. Berline is even joined by the Sherman Oaks Presbyterian Church Quartet (where Berline and his wife are longtime members, with Bette Berline playing piano and singing soprano) for a heartfelt treatment of the hymn "Were You There?" Of course, the leader's magical fiddle is in the center of every track, and bluegrass fans should consider this one of Byron Berline's finest recordings. ~ Ken Dryden

| | Lefty Frizzell That's The Way Life Goes: The Hit Songs 1950-1975 CD (2004)
Tennessee Christmas album
$19.55 There have been many Lefty Frizzell compilations over the years, most of them excellent, but few surpass Columbia/Legacy's comprehensive, listenable 1997 double-disc set Look What Thoughts Will Do, which covers nearly his entire career, stopping short of his last hits in the mid-'70s. Raven's 2005 set That's the Way Life Goes 1950-1975 contends with the Legacy compilation by covering more territory while simultaneously being more concise. It's a single-disc set running a generous 28 tracks, beginning with his first big hit, "If You Got the Money I've Got the Time," and ending a quarter a century later with such marvelous latter-day singles as "That's the Way Love Goes," "I Never Go Around Mirrors," and "Life's Like Poetry." In between, all of his big hits and signature songs are present, including "I Love You a Thousand Ways," "Look What Thoughts Will Do," "Always Late (With Your Kisses)," "Give Me More, More, More (Of Your Kisses)," "Run 'Em Off," "The Long Black Veil," and "Saginaw, Michigan." Since most of the music Lefty recorded was at the very least very good, more extensive sets like Look What Thoughts Will Do have more great music to offer -- there's simply more of it there -- but as an introduction and overview to Frizzell's career, That's the Way Life Goes is the best compilation yet. ...
