Kansas hired Bob Ezrin to tighten up their sound for 1988's In the Spirit of Things. In a strange way, the timing was opportune, since they had a hit in 1986's Power, and 1988 was welcome to veterans, thanks to the boom of classic rock radio stations and the rejuvenating power of the CD. And, give 'em credit -- they wound up with an album that's arguably more focused than their '70s highlights. That doesn't mean it's on par, since they can't deliver a hit single as good as "Carry On Wayward Son" and "Point of Know Return," and whatever remnants of humor they had are gone, as this is doggedly somber. Still, they're musically more adept, thanks to Ezrin and guitarist Steve Morse, which is welcome. That doesn't mean it's an unqualified success, however, since the cavernous, DDD-wannabe production screams 1988 even more than Leftoverture epitomizes 1976. Nevertheless, In the Spirit of Things remains one of the group's more consistent albums and easily a latter-day highlight. (By the way, Brendan O'Brien, a superstar producer of the '90s, working with Pearl Jam and Stone Temple Pilots, recorded this record.) ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine In The Spirit Of Things Music Kansas In The Spirit Of Things Songs In The Spirit Of Things Music Review Average Rating: (3.3 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews KANSAS-IN THE SPIRIT OF THINGS VERY DISAPPOINTING--SOUNDED MORE LIKE A GOSPEL ALBUM THAN A KANSAS ALBUM--I EXPECTED MUCH MORE Submitted by bbjnnovak (CHICAGO,IL. Super Kansas I have heard comments from Kansas fans about this album not measuring up to the rest of their stuff. I totally disagree. Being a musician myself, this album floors me. The guitar work is some of the best I have every heard. The vocals are excellent as usual. And the lyrics are deep like most Kansas stuff. If you're a musician, you have to hear this one. Not the best, but miles ahead of others... I own the LP from 1981 and I still listen to this album regularly. Probably Ghosts, Bells of Saint James and Rainmaker are three of my all-time Kansas favs. The whole of the album is much more AOR than progressive and the absence of Livgren and Steinhardt is obvious. But nevertheless it's an outstanding and powerful album. Submitted by Pau (El Prat, Barcelona, Catalonia) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

A very disappointing follow up to Power I bought this on the strength of 'Power', which is fantastic. I also bought it knowing that 'the inspector' was on guitar. However it is pales into insignificance, compared to 'Power'. Totally forgettable apart from possibly 'House on fire', 'the inspector' has obviously been restricted on this album. Personnel: Micky Fitz (vocals); Steve Kent, Steve Whale (guitar); Mark Brennan (bass instrument); Micky Fairbairn (drums). Years after the original heyday of British Oi!, the Business released their third album, WELCOME TO THE REAL WORLD, and the time spent honing their craft showed on the finely-wrought, anthemic tunes. The stylistic perimeters of Oi! can be constricting, but The Business managed to rise above it with a sense of uplift that originally ...
