| | Billie Holiday God Bless The Child CD Billie Holiday Discography of CDs
While the instrumentation is clearly an attempt at broadening Holiday's appeal to reach the modern pop market, such tracks as "Them There Eyes" actually sound right at home with these new arrangements. The focal point, of course, is Holiday's voice. She sounds as good here as ever--wistful, sensual, pained, and sensitively nuanced. "You're My Thrill" and "Keeps On Rainin'" are excellent examples of her legendary art, proffering further proof that Holiday's flame burns brightly in any context.
GOD BLESS THE CHILD brings together some of Holiday's signature tunes, including the title track, "Lover Man," and "T'Aint Nobody's Business If I Do." Hard line Lady Day fans may take issue with the heavy string orchestrations that fleshes out the sound of this set--and with the somewhat over-the-top backing chorus on "God Bless The Child."
Personnel includes: Billie Holiday (vocals).

God Bless The Child album
$16.29 Recorded in Louisiana, not terribly far from Mahalia Jackson's birthplace, this is a 13-song tribute to the legendary Queen of Gospel. Staples leads all the tracks with Lucky Peterson on the Hammond B-3 organ. This is a very bare-bones set, and after the fourth song, "If I Could Hear My Mother Pray Again," the format becomes boring and the songs ...
| | Doc Cheatham & Nicholas Payton CD (1997)
God Bless The Child CD music
$11.19 DOC CHEATHAM AND NICHOLAS PAYTON was nominated for a 1998 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Instrumental Performance, Individual or Group. "Stardust" won the 1998 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Instrumental Solo.
This matchup between trumpeters Doc Cheatham (91 at the time) and Nicholas Payton (just 23) is quite logical and delightful. Cheatham, one of the few survivors of the 1920s, was still in remarkably ...
| | Norah Jones Fall CD (2009)
God Bless The Child music CDs
$15.05 With The Fall, Norah Jones completes the transition away from her smooth cabaret beginnings and toward a mellowly arty, modern singer/songwriter. Jones began this shift on 2007's Not Too Late, an album that gently rejected her tendencies for lulling, tasteful crooning, but The Fall is a stronger, more cohesive work, maintaining an elegantly dreamy state that's faithful to the crooner of Come Away with Me while feeling ...

God Bless The Child album

| | Harry Connick, Jr Your Songs CD (2009)
God Bless The Child CD music
$10.99 Much like 2001's SONGS I HEARD and 2004's ONLY YOU, 2009's YOUR SONGS finds vocalist/pianist Harry Connick, Jr. coming up with an urbane, passionate set of American popular standards and contemporary pop classics that he both performs and orchestrates. While his previous recordings leaned toward the classicist side--ONLY YOU featured songs of the '50s and '60s--YOUR SONGS features a more eclectic mix of standards and pop songs, with Connick's own lush orchestration lending an overall aesthetic of languid romanticism. To this end, Connick turns Billy Joel's "Just the Way You Are" into a kind of Herb Alpert-inspired '60s pop nugget and, conversely, the Beatles' 1964 classic "And I Love Her" gets a kind of '70s Latin lounge feel with classical guitar flourishes. However, Connick isn't only concerned ...
