"I Am So Glad I Took My Time," released on Fee Records, was their debut single, but the Detroit quartet struck gold with their second release (actually, the Floaters were actually a quintet; Ralph Mitchell missed the "Float On" session and the album's photo shoot for some unexplained reason, though he was present for the other tracks). "Float On" was 11 minutes and 46 seconds of pure magic; the tune echoed the group's name, for it just floated on a bed of rhythm and harmony as the guys introduced themselves and gave their astrological signs. The other Floaters are Paul Mitchell, Jonathan Murray, Charles Clark, and Ralph Cunningham. Disk jockeys loved "Float On," they could pair it with Issac Hayes' "By the Time I Get to Phoenix," make a munchie run, and be back before Ike sings "she'll be rising." "Float On" aced Billboard's R&B chart and Great Britain's pop chart. Nothing else as magical appears on this LP. They followed with "You Don't Have to Say You Love Me," which surprisingly charted despite Charles Clark's whiny, uninteresting falsetto lead. ~ Andrew Hamilton

| | Brothers Johnson Right On Time CD (1977)
Float On songs
$5.59 Potentially viewed as something of a warm-up for Quincy Jones before producing Michael Jackson's wildly successful Off the Wall and Thriller albums, the Brothers Johnson's first two releases spawned hits like "I'll Be Good to You" and brought George and Louis Johnson to a mass audience of their own. (Louis, in fact, would go on to play bass on those first two sessions by the King of Pop.) As with the Jackson discs, Jones creates a seamless mix of pop and funk on the Brothers sophomore release Right on Time, helping to create the group's second chart-topper "Strawberry Letter 23" as well the equally effervescent, minor R&B hit "Runnin' for Your Lovin'." With Earth, Wind & Fire's airy dancefloor hits in mind, the Brothers also deliver polished funk tracks like "Right on Time" and "Never Leave You Lonely," as well as more pop-friendly material like "Free Yourself, Be Yourself" and "Love Is." And with ...
| | Best Of Blue Magic CD (1974)
Float On album
$7.55 Blue Magic's sublime sophomore effort manages to retain the delicate beauty of their debut while summoning a more confident, robust approach to group harmony. The Magic of the Blue is above all a celebration of the human voice in all its myriad forms of expression. Whether transcending contrived ballads like "Three-Ring Circus" (a bland rewrite of the earlier hit "Sideshow") or soaring on the strength of up-tempo dance tunes like the excellent title cut, Blue Magic's harmonies are impeccable, showcased by arranger
In a perfect world, all of Blue Magic's '70s LPs would have been reissued on CD in the late '80s or '90s. But that didn't happen; when the 21st century arrived, most of the Philadelphia vocal group's '70s albums were out of print. However, various best-of packages were available on CD. The most comprehensive is The Best of Blue Magic: Soulful Spell, a superb 20-song collection that Rhino assembled in 1996. Less generous is Magic of the Blue: Greatest Hits; originally ...
| | Blue Magic Soulful Spell: The Best Of CD (1996)
Float On CD music
$7.45 Released in 1996, The Best of Blue Magic: Soulful Spell typified the pros and cons of compiling a set from one of '70s R&B's best acts. It should be easy. During its 1972-1989 run, Blue Magic always had a fierce and devoted fan base and at least 30 essential songs to choose from. The thing that weighs this set down is the omission of quite a few of those tracks. However, the majority of what's here can't be argued with. "Sideshow," "What's Come Over Me," and "Look Me Up" are all powered by Ted Mills' uncommonly strong falsetto and Norman Harris' earthy yet ethereal productions. This set offers essential tracks from 1975's great 13 Blue Magic Lane. "Loneliest House on the Block," "Haunted By Your Love," and "Chasing Rainbows" are all suitably creepy and sweeping. If anything makes this CD less than great, it's the single edits of album favorites like "Spell," "Look Me Up," and "Chasing Rainbows." The diminishing quality of the post-1975 work doesn't help either. "Teach Me (It's Something About Love)," and "Freak-N-Stein" ...

Float On CD music
$19.99 The 26 tracks on this anthology have two things in common: all were released on Laurie or affiliated labels, and all were co-written or written by Ernie Maresca (who is the featured artist on four of the songs, too). Maresca is most known as the composer or co-composer of Dion's "Runaround Sue," "The Wanderer," and "Lovers Who Wander," as well as for his own 1962 hit "Shout! Shout! (Knock Yourself Out)." But did his talent merit a sweep through the secondary flops from his pen, some of which didn't come out until the 1980s (though apparently everything here was recorded between the late '50s and early '70s)? To be harsh, no. It is a jumble of largely mediocre, formulaic pop/rock, much of it indebted to the doo wop music of the late '50s and early '60s, even if much of it was actually recorded in the mid- to late '60s. Some of it is worth more than one listen, including the early Dion & the Belmonts singles "No One Knows" and "A Lover's Prayer," though those have long been easily acquired elsewhere. The 1966 Chiffons cuts "Open Your Eyes (I Will Be There)" and "Up on the Bridge" show a greater pop-soul sophistication than the other material, though they're not up to the level of that girl group's best hits. Bernadette Carroll's "Try Your Luck" is not-bad girl group-style pop, and the Four Coins' "I'll Never Love Again" is decent 1966 harmony pop/rock rather in the style of groups like the Vogues, the Tokens, and Jay ...
