The Women of Soul is an entertaining, budget-line collection that features both classic soul (Etta James' "Tell Mama," Aretha Franklin's "Never Grow Old") and urban soul (Jody Watley's "Lookin for a New Love," Patti LaBelle's "New Attitude," Stephanie Mills' ("I Have Learned to Respect the Power of Love" and Alicia Myers' "You Get the Best from Me"). The result is a bit incoherent, but it's still entertaining, especially when its price is added into the equation. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Old Hands
Yonder Mountain String Band Old Hands CD  (2003) Enhanced CD

Women Of Soul music CDs
CD $11.39  4 stars Audio Samples Definitive Album
A band knows they've made the big time -- at least in bluegrass and old-timey circles -- when Tim O'Brien and Darol Anger start guesting on their latest album. Old Hands also features guest spots by Dirk Powell and Jerry Douglas and has been produced by dobro player Sally Van Meter. Of course none of this would matter too much if the Yonder Mountain String Band didn't pretty much have their vocal and instrumental chops together to begin with. Guitarist Adam Aijala, banjoist Dave Johnston, mandolinist Jeff Austin, and bassist Ben Kaufmann form a smooth unit that calls to mind other recent bluegrass/folk groups like Rice, Rice, Hillman, and Pendersen and New Grange. Like these groups, the band relies on a number of lead vocalists, superb harmony, and an instrumental finesse to pull it all together. On Old Hands all of these elements are brought to bear on 13 songs by Benny Galloway, a guitarist/writer who also makes several appearances on the album. There's the spontaneous "Deep ...
Beg For Mercy
G-Unit Beg For Mercy CD  (2003) Edited

Women Of Soul songs
CD $10.59  4.3 stars Top 500 Audio Samples
Queens rapper 50 Cent ascended to the pinnacle of the hip-hop world in 2003, and the latter part of the year saw his crew, G-Unit, drop by with their own ubiquitous single "Stunt 101" and debut record, BEG FOR MERCY. Far from an entourage cashing in on one member's immediate success, the success of both 50 Cent and G-Unit is more of a chicken-and-egg situation. Since 1999, G-Unit's mixtape moments have been among the most sought after on the streets, helping to pump up 50 Cent's status until he exploded onto the mainstream. Unsurprisingly, BEG FOR MERCY delivers a blistering attack of street rap that survives on its own merits. While 50 Cent opens the show on "Poppin' Them Thangs," he quickly blends into the mix, as G-Unit features two other more-than-able lyricists equal to the task and well-versed in trading off with the wildly talented 50. Lloyd Banks brings an arrogant strut that plays off Buck's subtle yet angry drawl. Together and separately, they both play off 50's familiar laid back style. The most intriguing moment on BEG FOR MERCY is the torn "Footprints," which inserts a renowned religious poem into the middle of the gangster world, a fitting summation of the unique world view of G-Unit. Though backing posses had become de rigueur for commercially successful rappers by the early 2000s, 50 Cent's posse, G-Unit, is somewhat exceptional, as showcased on its album debut, Beg for Mercy. Following 50's unsuccessful stint with Columbia Records during the late '90s, he returned to the streets and willfully assembled a backing posse, with himself as the superstar and his cohorts as his street-level representatives, thereby ensuring himself future street credibility and enough firepower for entire mixtapes. The plan paid off in spades as G-Unit worked the mixtape circuit, releasing one after another, while 50 in turn blew up in 2003 with his solo debut, Get Rich or Die Tryin', yet maintained his street cred with his well-bred posse, touring extensively and releasing still more mixtapes. All of this made the eventual release of Beg for Mercy a real event -- and all the more so because Murder Inc had announced that they would simultaneously release a new Ja Rule album and go head to head, sales-wise (though they wisely reconsidered), and because Interscope bumped up the release date of Beg for Mercy to November 14 (citing bootlegging concerns) so that G-Unit could contentiously go head to head with Jay-Z and his much-anticipated Black Album. It's thus difficult to distance yourself from the aura of hype surrounding Beg for Mercy and evaluate it as music rather than as an event. Of ...

Free Your Mind
Funkadelic Free Your Mind CD  (1970)

Women Of Soul CD music
CD $17.79
Funkadelic's self-titled debut may have touched upon drug-induced acid rock, but on their 1970 follow-up, FREE YOUR MIND AND YOUR ASS WILL FOLLOW, the band blows the door off its hinges. Look no further than the album-opening ten-minute title track--perhaps the most spaced out composition witnessed by rock & roll since the Rolling Stones' late-'60s psychedelic-phase--for the proof. Funkadelic is still a step away from perfecting its funk-rock craft. This album is hindered by very treble-heavy production, a sonic approach very unlike the group's future bass-indulgent works. FREE YOUR MIND AND YOUR ASS WILL FOLLOW is one of Funkadelic's shortest albums, at barely over a half-hour in length. But the one-dimensional production proves even more frustrating. There's plenty of sonic experimentation going on within ...
