Songs Of The Old West CD music
$6.25 Digitally remastered by Joseph M. Palmaccio (Sony Music Studios, New York, New York).
Country singer Marty Robbins recorded many different kinds of music in his career, from rock & roll to Hawaiian love songs, but it's with this collection (particularly with the hit song "El Paso") that he is most remembered. This beautifully remastered 1960 album is a combination of traditional songs and Robbins' originals, all with themes of life in the Old West, or story-songs with a Western setting. This is not country music per se--there's no twang or pedal steel guitar to be heard--but clean-picked acoustic guitars (with elements of American and Mexican folk music throughout), ...

| | Dave Swarbrick Rags, Reels & Airs CD (1967) (Import) United Kingdom
Songs Of The Old West songs
$15.59 This is an album that could really only have come from the late '60s, offering Swarbrick a free hand to range through many styles of music. The focus, quite naturally, is on folk music, and his playing is never less than superlative throughout. The backing by Martin Carthy, whose guitar work has always exuded subtlety, offers an excellent foil -- but then by this point, the two had already developed an empathetic relationship which continues today. What's most fascinating is Swarb's dipping his toe into ragtime music -- the only real occasion on record. But both the curiously titled "Dill Pickles Ray" and "Porcupine Rag," played with panache and true verve, suggest he should do more. On those cuts, Diz Disley, best known for his jazz playing, steps in behind and offers some very full accompaniment. But it's just one of several very pleasant surprises on this disc. Considering he was just 24 when this was recorded, Swarbrick had already completely come into his own as an instrumentalist -- just listen to "The Salamanca Medley," delivered completely solo to hear his mastery -- combining ideas old and new. There are also plenty of outings for his mandolin playing, rarely heard since, and that's a shame, since he offers plenty of invention and dexterity to pieces like "Bottom of the Punchbowl/The Swallow Tail." And then there's the unusual eight-string fiddle, with its four drone strings to offer a rich depth to material like "Villafjord." The double-tracking on "Spanish Ladies Medley," "Staten Island," and "Jimmy Allen" give Swarb a chance to explore more ideas ...

| | Cheryl Lynn In The Night / Instant Love CDs (2006)
Songs Of The Old West album
$10.69 This two-fer assembles Cheryl Lynn's third and fourth LPs for Columbia, released during the last gasps of the disco empire. The 1981 effort In the Night pairs the singer with producer Ray Parker, Jr., who strips away the remaining vestiges of disco-era sensibilities to focus on appealingly heartfelt R&B that radiates with warmth. While In the Night boasts its fair share of dancefloor-ready material -- the opening "Shake It Up Tonight" even cracked the Billboard R&B Top Ten -- it's the more mellow and romantic songs that command attention, and for all of its considerable sass, Lynn's voice also boasts a vulnerability that's truly affecting. For the follow-up Instant Love, she teams with another R&B superstar, Luther Vandross, who handles production duties and chimes in for a duet remake of the Marvin Gaye/Tammi Terrell classic "If This World Were Mine." While largely abandoning the ballad approach of In the Night, the album similarly avoids the schmaltz that afflicts so many records of the era in question, instead evoking the classic soul of the previous decade but with a contemporary touch ideally suited to Lynn's voice. ~ Jason Ankeny
