MCA's Best of the Blind Boys is a good, but not exceptional, collection of 12 highlights from the group's Peacock material. There are a number of wondrous performances here -- including "Love Lifted Me," "Jesus Satisfied" and "Speak for Jesus" -- but in general, the recordings aren't quite as strong as their recordings for Vee-Jay. Furthermore, the album feels a little skimpy in these days of extensive reissues, making it more of interest for completists and serious fans than listeners seeking out good values or representative collections. ~ Leo Stanley

Best Of The Blind Boys album
$13.79 This collection of the Blind Boys' early 1980s output is a wellspring of great rhythm and blues-inflected gospel, featuring the "original" line-up, which includes lead vocalist Clarence Fountain, bass vocalist Johnny Fields, and tenor George Scott. Among the highlights are the dynamite "Morning Train," with its funky breaks and galvanizing, double-time "I'm going home" finale; and the sustained high-note testifying of "Beams of Heaven." Spoken-word moments--as when baritone Olice Thomas recalls a near-fatal highway accident as a prelude to "I'll Always Be in Love with God," or the call and response of "Shackled by a Heavy Burden"--add a live-at-the-pulpit authenticity to the proceedings, making ...
| | No Direction Home Soundtrack - Bootleg Series 7 No Direction Home: The Bootleg Series Vol. 7 CDs (2005)
Best Of The Blind Boys CD music
$16.09 The soundtrack to Martin Scorcese's two-part PBS documentary on Bob Dylan, NO DIRECTION HOME is a two-disc affair consisting almost entirely of previously unreleased material. One couldn't start any further towards the beginning of Dylan's career than this collection's first track, "When I Got Troubles," a modest, folkish tune caught on tape by a high school friend and presumed to be the first original Dylan song ever recorded. From there, we follow the breakneck trajectory of Dylan's early career, as he develops at an unprecedented rate, from young Woody Guthrie acolyte (a rare version of Guthrie's signature tune "This Land is Your Land") to his own ...

Best Of The Blind Boys CD music
$15.99 The first disc of PSALMS, HYMNS & SPIRITUAL SONGS is straightforward, as McClurkin treads in traditional gospel fashion, singing standards and beautiful self-penned songs of praise (including the rousing "I Will Sing") to the crowd's relentless pleasure. The second disc unfolds a bit more unpredictably, as McClurkin breaks into impromptu medleys and leads a playful discussion about spreading the gospel to the world. In addition to multilingual songs, he gives ...
| | Consafos Tilting At Windmills CD (2005)
Best Of The Blind Boys music CDs
$10.09 Consafos sounds as if they've been listening to old-timey country legends and Cowboy Junkies judging by the lovely opener "On and On." Led by singer Stefanie Drootin, the song flows with an acoustic arrangement including Billy Talbot (Jr.) on mandolin. It then veers into a sound that closely resembles the title track of Pink Floyd's Atom Heart Mother. The son of Crazy Horse member Billy Talbot, Talbot keeps the song moving and winding through different melodies, always resulting in an interesting journey. "Welcome Mat" has Drootin shining with an almost angelic quality on the darker, dirge-like tune. Trumpeter David Max Crawford adds a lot of color here before changing direction again into a Beatles-like feel. The simplicity of the songs, regardless of the changes throughout, is the band's greatest asset, especially during the pure, haunting Americana title track complete with the brushes of drummer Alance Ward; "Live life live life to the full," she sings on the gorgeous song. Another fine moment comes along during the ambling-cum-Neil Young "Chelsea's Got a Knife" which could be an alt country version of the Beautiful South. Ward's harmonica is also at play ...
