Tumbling Tumbleweeds album
$6.89 Like some downhome version of the Mills Brothers, the Sons of the Pioneers mixed Western swing, cowboy ballads, and sophisticated vocal harmonies to produce some of the biggest country-crossover hits of the 1930s. A band apart, the Sons were too jazzy to fit in with the cowboys and too Western to be accepted by fans of their true peers like the above-mentioned Millses or even the Boswell Sisters. Nonetheless, they did just fine for themselves, creating such timeless tunes as the stirring and wistful "Tumbling Tumbleweeds" and the atmospheric, almost ghostly narrative "Cool Water," accounts ...

Tumbling Tumbleweeds music CDs
$6.25 Digitally remastered by Joseph M. Palmaccio (Sony Music Studios, New York, New York).
Country singer Marty Robbins recorded many different kinds of music in his career, from rock & roll to Hawaiian love songs, but it's with this collection (particularly with the hit song "El Paso") that he is most remembered. This beautifully remastered 1960 album is a combination of traditional songs and Robbins' originals, all with themes of life in the Old West, or story-songs with a Western setting. This is not country music per se--there's no twang or pedal steel guitar to be heard--but clean-picked acoustic guitars (with elements of American and Mexican folk music throughout), soft drums, a chorus of close harmony, and the suave, mellow, distinctive voice of Marty Robbins. The songs are about work, love, travel, death, the beauty of the American West, and living life on your own terms--and paying the price for it. In some ways, Marty Robbins was the Nat "King" Cole of country music--that voice could take you out of your reality into another.

Tumbling Tumbleweeds songs
$9.25 This remastered collection of the Sons of the Pioneers' 1950s Western tunes is highlighted by such tunes as "Tumbling Tumbleweeds" and "Ghost Riders in the Sky."
The preeminent vocal group on the "western" side of country & western, the cowboy balladeers Sons of the Pioneers began in the 1930s, but one of their most popular albums was this 1959 release. It was recorded to exploit the then-new "Living Stereo" recording technology RCA had developed, and it features re-recorded versions of some of the band's best-known material, with added pop-orchestral accompaniment and crisp, hi-fi engineering. Not for country purists, but surely a classic pop record.

| | R J Mischo West Wind Blowin: Mountain Top Productions, Vol. 3 CD (1999)
Tumbling Tumbleweeds album
$10.45 This was Mischo's first album after his move from Minneapolis to San Francisco, and his fifth overall. It's a nice mix of seven originals and eight covers, with two instrumentals. Mischo is one heck of a harp player, a good singer, and an especially proficient songwriter. Obviously the other musicians on the CD agree or you wouldn't see their names on the bill. They include first-call guitarists Rusty Zinn and Steve Freund (who relocated to California in 1994 after playing almost 20 years with several Chicago masters). Although not a live recording, West Wind Blowin' has that sound. When you're listening to it, you feel like you've just walked out of a jumpin' club (sans crowd noise). The only exceptions to this are "R. J. Getup! Milk That Cow!," with just Mischo on harp and spoken word and Randy Bermudes on stand-up bass; and the closer, "South City Fog," a slow, moody instrumental showcasing Mischo's forlorn-sounding, chromatic harp playing. The best tracks are the straight up Chicago originals "What I Got to Have," the swingin' Sonny Boy Williamson tribute "Goat Whiskers," and Junior Wells' "It's My Life Baby." Not only a strong effort by Mischo, West Wind Blowin' is one of Zinn's best performances. Be sure to check out his Sammy Lawhorn vibrato on "Jelly Sellin' Woman." ~ Ann Wickstrom
On this CD, RJ Mischo demonstrates that he is one of the premier harmonica players on the West Coast. Blues and Rhythm Magazine has stated RJ Mischo's "harp playing places him amongst the upper strata of the instrument's many practitioners." This 1998 se

Tumbling Tumbleweeds CD music
$10.49 "Little Miss Dynamite" stormed the late-'50s and early-'60s charts with several spot-on classics, and in the process showed a deft vocal touch with pop, country, rockabilly, and rock & roll material. Especially displaying an affinity for both Wanda Jackson's snarled delivery and Dottie West's earnest tone, Lee electrified even the most banal of songs. This is made clear on Polygram's Lee roundup, I'm Sorry, as the singer ...
