Great baseline for a band who has really matured
Awesome first album!!
Some effidence of technical immaturity is evident, but that's to be expected from a band's first album. They certainly cleared that up on Images and Words and each subsequent album. I've read other reviews that knock the old singers style. I think he does a supurb job (all though not the same chemistry as James). And wait ....just a minute ....looking through the cd cover, IS THAT A 4 STRING IN MR MYUNG'S HANDS??? What a difference 2 more strings can make to the bottom end eh Johnny?? I love these guys!!!

completely blown away( 15 years already)
I still remember having read a review in a metal fanzine about this new upcoming prog-rock bank out of the states, then walking into my favourite record store and listening to it the first time. I was blown away. I had never heard songs of such complexity played with so much power and skill. The songs are tramendous. Dominicis vocals go along with the neckbreaking songwriting. Every note fits to every song. Petrucci's and Moore 's soloing always stays melodic even if the push the speed behind the soundbarrier. The rhythm section (myung and portnoy) have set new standards for every hardrock band since then. Every song's a jewel although "fortune in lies" and "the killing hand" always remain my favourites. I like James la Brie a lot, and I like what he did on the later dream theater albums, but his voice is not made for these songs (witnessed it live many times). An album that was far beyond evrything at that time and should be a part of every serious rock music collection.
