Later Ray went to the Musician's Institute in Los Angeles, California where his teacher was Frank Gambale (Chic Corea's Electric Band). Ray also attended workshops in West Virginia, California and England with legendary British Rock guitarist Robert Fripp (King Krimson). During the early nineties Ray began studying and performing on the koto, shamisen, pipa. | | Masada Quintet Stolas: Book Of Angels Volume 12 CD (2009)
Alizarin Sky CD music
$12.99 STOLAS is the 12th volume in John Zorn's BOOK OF ANGELS series of compositions, and it's a welcome and compelling idea that he decided to re-form his stellar Masada quintet for the occasion. In addition to the rhythm section of Joey Baron and Greg Cohen, trumpeter Dave Douglas, and pianist Uri Caine, Zorn enlisted tenor sax giant Joe Lovano to replace him on all but one cut where he adds his alto, making the group a sextet. Here klezmer, Yiddish folk music, bossa nova, and other Latin jazz all come together in a seamless meld of tunes that accent the symmetry of ensemble play as much as they do an extremely advanced sense of ensemble harmonics, rhythmic invention, and, of course, tautly arranged spaces for individual improvisation--check out the album's longest cut, "Tagriel," for evidence as Zorn's composition not only travels genres but centuries. The popping showcase for solos that is "Serakel" is nonetheless a grooving post-bop tune with a joyous klezmer lyric line. The sheer shimmering beauty of "Psisya," which moves from jazz ballad to bossa to Hebrew folk song and back again, is stunning. While Stolas is not completely "inside," it is far more so than most have a right to expect. For newcomers to Zorn's music, this may not sound typical of his ...
| | Art Pepper No Limit CD (1977)
Alizarin Sky music CDs
$8.29 Art Pepper's third recording in his comeback years was recorded in a studio but has the emotional intensity and chance-taking improvisations of his live concerts of the period. Joined by his regular group (pianist George Cables, bassist Tony Dumas, and drummer Carl Burnett), Pepper performs lengthy versions of three of his originals (including the modal "My Laurie") and "Ballad of the Sad Young Men." "Mambo de la Pinta" is a little unusual because Pepper overdubbed himself on tenor to join his alto in the ensembles. Throughout this album (and during his final ten years), Art Pepper played every note as if it might be his last one. The passion displayed on this particular album is enough of a reason by itself to acquire it. ~ Scott Yanow

| | Modern Jazz Quartet Topsy: This One's For Basie CD (1985)
Alizarin Sky album
$9.89 Despite the title of this CD, the music on this 1985 studio set from The Modern Jazz Quartet is not a program of Count Basie tunes (with the exception of "Topsy") although Basie apparently liked the John Lewis composition "D and E." The other unrelated music is highlighted by an unaccompanied feature for vibraphonist Milt Jackson ("Nature Boy"), "Reunion Blues" and three more complex ...
| | Red Norvo Second Time Around CD (1975)
Alizarin Sky CD music
$12.09 After making only one recording as a leader between 1960-1973, vibraphonist Red Norvo cut three albums for Famous Door during 1975-1977, launching a bit of a comeback. This LP, his second Famous Door release, is an excellent effort. The veteran vibraphonist plays six veteran swing standards plus his own "Santa Monica Blues" with pianist Dave McKenna, bassist Milt Hinton, drummer Mousey Alexander, and (on four of the seven numbers) Kenny Davern on soprano. These small-group swing performances (which some would call "mainstream") are quite enjoyable. [The 2003 ...
