In retrospect, Hunger was a transitional record for the Makers, both in image and substance. Shucking their mod suits for a more sleazed-up, greasy presence, they turned out a record that was as aggressive as any of its predecessors, yet intensified by a production that harnessed the group's hoodlum energy into something more sinister. New member Jamie Maker was critical to this change -- with his muscular guitar playing, he heralded a shift toward a larger, more swaggering sound, and next to this, Mike Maker's flamboyant bawl gained an additional malevolence that made one wonder if the group was growing too large for garage rock. Indeed, 1998 showed that big changes had come, and in the aftermath of their glam rock conversion, it quickly became clear that Hunger was the last breath of the Makers' life as garage punk hooligans. ~ Jim Smith Makers Hunger Songs | 1. | Small Town Depression | |

Hunger album
$9.09 Like a phoenix rising from the much-grieved-over ashes of Uncle Tupelo, Jay Farrar's Son Volt brings a balance of heart and mind back to the country-rock community. Which isn't all that surprising, considering it was Farrar who added that indeterminable sense of melancholic reserve to UT's albums in the first place. Son Volt retains Farrar's Gram Parsons-like ideal that traditional music works best when contemplating simple emotional truths not diluted by narrative or melodic cliches. From his ex-UT partner, Jeff Tweedy (leader of Wilco), Farrar also learned that the thick and speedy guitar textures of punk rock are just as adept at baring the honesties of the soul--that punk rock has become the modern folk music.
TRACE constantly wanders between such apparent opposites. There are fiery, passionate declarations propelled by crunching and thick electric chords that never fall prey to roots-rock sloganeering--songs like "Loose String," a mid-tempo stomp with the dark observation that "too much living ain't no way to die," and "Route," a charging rocker that paints the life-on-the-road cliche within ...

Hunger album
$13.79 Continuing his stroll through pop's backpages, Rod Stewart moves on from "The Great Rock Classics of Our Time" and dives into the SOULBOOK, shorthand for all the great Motown and soul songs that still are in heavy rotation on oldies radio well into the new millennium. Rod doesn't ...
| | Judas Priest Concert Classics CD (2009) Reissue
Hunger CD music
$11.18 There was a time when British Steel was the hottest, hardest, and most awesome substance on the planet. On Judas Priest "Concert Classics", here it is, in its most appropriate circumstances: live, on stage. Judas Priest re-invented heavy metal. The first band to use the ...
| | Steve Winwood Junction Seven CD (1997)
Hunger music CDs
$12.29 Steve Winwood teams up with producer Narada Michael Walden, and the result is a fine, multi-textured disc. Winwood's calling card has always been his gritty, soulful voice, and he uses it to good effect on tunes like "Spy in the House of Love." The tune opens things up with a bang--it's an up-tempo, funky jam about falling under the influence of that powerful emotion.
The album continues with gospel-tinged ballads ("Angel of Mercy"), well-turned covers (Sly and the Family Stone's "Family Affair), and even a Cuban-inflected piece ("Got to Get Back to My Baby"). On the latter, Winwood employs some top-flight Cuban musicians, including percussionist Walfredo Reyes, and pianist, co-arranger Rebecca Mauleon-Santana. The tune is a real highlight, and defines some welcome new ground for Winwood -- he's come a long way from The Spencer Davis Group and "Gimme Some Lovin' ". All in all, a fine effort from an artist who keeps his musical gift well-tuned and his ear to the ground for new influences.
Recorded at Netherturkdonic Studios, Gloucestershire, England; Tarpan Studios, San Raphael, California; Le Crib, New York, New York; A&M Studios, Los Angeles, California.
Personnel: Steve Winwood (vocals, guitar, organ, keyboards, percussion); Des'ree (vocals); José Neto, Lenny Kravitz, Nile Rodgers, Vernon "Ice" Black (guitar); Narada Michael Walden (dobro, keyboards, drums, percussion, programming, drum programming); Michael McEvoy (dobro, ...

| | Stealing Beauty CD (1996) Original Soundtrack
Hunger album
$11.79 In such films as Last Tango In Paris and The Last Emperor, director Bernardo Bertolucci has taken special care with the soundtrack music, resulting in albums that stood on their own. Stealing Beauty, on the other hand, is a "music from the motion picture" disc of 12 songs that range from Billie Holiday's "I'll Be Seeing You" to Stevie Wonder's "Superstition." The element that seems to bring the disparate tracks together ...

| | Daevid Allen Divided Alien Playbax - Live At The Mistake Vol. 2 CD (2006)
Hunger music CDs
$15.19 Archive recording limited to 1,000 copies. Part one of a 2CD set with beautiful artwork by Daevid Allen himself.
While disc one of this two-disc concert from 1980 (volumes eight and nine in the Bananamoon Obscura limited series, sold separately) presents mostly the material that would become the 1982 LP Divided Alien Playbax; disc two offers more diversity. Allen is still alone on-stage, backed by pre-recorded tapes (although an uncredited saxophonist seems to join him for "Pearls"). A few remaining cuts from Divided Alien Playbax are performed, "Froghello" and "Smile" deserving special mentions. But these tracks illustrate how odd that album remains in Allen's discography. When compared to the other material, they sound closer to something from Robert Fripp's League of Gentlemen than any other Allen project. Other highlights include the longstanding ...

$20.29 Uncle Dewey is "country," not "city." He's a man with a great sense of humor and wonderful adventures from all his years working on a huge ship going to Europe, Africa and Asia for 4 months at a time. Dewey returned from the sea to my home in New York City, and told us all about his travels...making wishes on a beach on the coast of India, hiking to a black volcanic beach on the island of Santorini in Greece, and on and on...and then there was his EYE!!!As a young girl, his "tales on the wave of adventure" were pure magic. He was my favorite adult. You and your family will really get hooked by this story as well, and if you love dogs, you're going to love this one! This cd, for ...
