Well, it's not new age. This alternative rock relic was actually the first full-length release from Vancouver's Mint, way back in 1991. It's raggedy and spazzy, deliberate and self-conscious -- the six-plus minute opener, "Bury Me Alive," builds up such a head of steam that the band can't seem to figure out how to wrap it up. The same goes for the Soft Cell cover "Say Hello, Wave Goodbye," which has a great chord progression, but little to say beyond its title. You get the impression that the band is just happy it sounds so good. In this way, Windwalker suggests early Buffalo Tom, another combo of the era that mixed hard-charging rockers with electrified country heartbreak. Windwalker has the power chords and nervous energy to spare, but it can only focus for a few minutes or measures at a time. Standouts include "Insight" and "Moving in Circles," which best harness this anxious, falling-forward sound. Sure, the singer sometimes sounds like he's screaming because there's nothing else to say. And the drums often threaten to outpace the guitars. But if you miss the halcyon days when Walt Mink, Mudhoney, and old Replacements records ruled cassette decks, then Rainstick just might be worth a shake. Besides, its catalog number is MRD-001, so you can say you were there when. ~ Johnny Loftus

Russell StaffordArtist BiographyRussell is one of the Northwest’s up and coming singer/songwriting talents. His unique vocal and musical style has been described as a "melting pot of sound" and is garnering his first release, Freshwater, both local and national press. Born and raised in Sydney Australia, Russell migrated to the US at the age of 19. Russell Joined the Australian band Lessen at the age of 15. The band made several nationally televised appearances, opened for Russell Crowe’s band thirty odd foot of grunts in Sydney and recorded with Sony before their split in 1999. Following the split, Russell moved to the U.S. and had a 3 year absence from the music scene. In early 2004, Russell began writing his own songs and singing for the first time. The Blues Bullies have been Southern Colorado’s Rock/Blues band of choice since 2002. The band has delivered a distinct and powerful stage presence with good energy, influenced by a wide variety of blues and rock styles, performing together as far back as the “70’s. After cutting a successful CD “Beatin Up On the Blues” in 2003 and achieving respectable sales, the group establish “High Plains Studio” and produced their new release “Paradise Bound". The opening cut “Semana De La Moto” (“Week of the Motorcycle” written and sung by keyboard player Pete Leri) is about our recent concert series in Mazatlan, and opens with hot sax, then scorching guitar leads. “Bully Zone” (written and sung by bassist Mark Litton) is a driving rock tune featuring driving guitar and organ, with sax breaks and a Bully Chorus. “Hard Road” (written and sung by guitarist Sonny Theis) features cello lead and burning slide guitar on a country rockish background. “Secuda La Cascabel” (“Snake in a Jar”, written and sung by drummer Dano Weston) is driving TexMex style rock featuring guitar, organ, sax and harmonica leads, about a rattle snake who crawled into a jar, only to have bikers pour tequila into it for future use “Time To Put The Soul On Ice” (written and sung by drummer Dano Weston) is a tribute to the great soul players of the past, and features a horn section. “Paradise Bound” (written and sung by bassist Mark Litton) is a mid tempo featuring an “E-bow” guitar lead. “Your Desire” (written and sung by guitarist Sonny Theis) is a driving rock guitar song featuring a keyboard synth lead. “Arthur and Itis” (written and sung by bassist Mark Litton) has Floyd influence, with sax and a horn section.(Don’t get older, you won’t like it). “Oh Babe” (written and sung by keyboardist Pete Leri) is a ballad about love featuring nice guitar work. “Laughlin” (written and sung by drummer Dano Weston) is a driving guitar rocker about a gambler.
