$6.59 | | Artie Shaw Greatest Hits CD (1998)
Rutter: Requiem / Cleobury, King's College Choir Cambridge
$7.59 This CD is part of RCA's 1996 Introduction to Jazz series which mostly features swing era recordings. Greatest Hits collects 14 recordings by clarinetist Artie Shaw with his second, third and fourth big bands. His "greatest hits" ("Begin the Beguine," "Frenesi" and the finest version ever of "Stardust") are here, along with some lesser-known tracks and vocals by Helen Forrest and Billie Holiday. Surprisingly, Shaw's Gramercy Five (which had a million seller in "Summit Ridge Drive") is absent and not even mentioned in the breezy liner notes; there is also no personnel listing for the orchestra, and the music is programmed somewhat randomly. There are more definitive Artie Shaw sets easily available, but this CD is OK for beginners if found at a budget price. ~ Scott Yanow

| | Tannahill Weavers Epona CD (1998)
Rutter: Requiem / Cleobury, King's College Choir Cambridge
$13.39 EPONA continues the Tannahill Weavers' nearly 20-year custom of making tightly woven, intense and often passionate music within the framework of their Scottish folk music heritage. EPONA features mostly traditional tunes, like the spirited "When the Kye Come Hame" and the instrumental "Carronside Set," which teams up a Highland air with a lively traditional jig and a modern jig by Jennifer Wrigley. Two graceful Robert Burns love songs are included as well, "Craigieburn Wood," and "Westlin' Winds." A large part of the Weavers' longevity and success is due to the group's changing lineup of highly skilled musicians, revolving around steadfast members Roy Gullane, on guitar and vocals, and Phil Smillie on flute, whistles, ...

Rutter: Requiem / Cleobury, King's College Choir Cambridge
$18.99 Since the days before David was king, shepherds have sat, tending their flocks, and played on their flutes and stringed instruments. We can still hear them calling to one another across continents, their music soaring into the night, conjuring up images of Galilee, Lebanon, Persia, Mesopotamia, Africa -- with the enchanting sound of lyre, harp, psaltry and lute wafting through our imaginations. Today the tradition continues: the modern day equivalent to these ancient instruments being the six string acoustic guitar. The sound has changed ever so slightly, but the haunting ability to stir the soul remains. And so we offer you hymns of praise, songs of inspiration and music for meditation and prayer, played by a master craftsman and world-class musician, Bobby Stanton. You may have heard him featured on Garrison Keillor's "A Prairie Home Companion" or playing in one of several Broadway musicals. You may have also caught his magical fingers strumming with the likes of Mark O'Connor, James Taylor, ...
