| | Jan Garber Hot Years 1925-1930 CD (1998)
Aria - The Ultimate Collection
$14.45 Jan Garber is most famous for leading a popular dance band in the 1930s and '40s, one that was originally inspired by Guy Lombardo and featured shaking saxophones and rather sickly sweet music that sounds laughably dated today. However, before he turned mostly toward schlock, Jan Garber had a surprisingly viable jazz/dance band in the 1920s. This CD from the collectors' TOM (The Old Masters) label mostly dates from 1926-29, and it is filled with cheerful and swinging ensembles, along with some harmless vocals and fine, concise solos from the no-name outfit. Among the highlights are such numbers as "Sister Kate," "Baby Face" (this particular band's one hit), "Tiger Rag" (taken from a movie soundtrack), "Steppin' Around" (with guest banjoist Harry Reser), "'Round Evening," "She's ...
| | Steve Tyrell Standard Time CD (2001)
Aria - The Ultimate Collection
$7.15 The Warehouse, Sear Sound, The Hit Factory and David Horowitz Music, New York, New York.
Steve Tyrell has had a long journeyman's career in the music business, serving as record company executive, songwriter, and producer. But no one could have predicted the twist his career took in the late '90s. After he sang standards on the soundtracks of the films Father of the Bride (1991) and Father of the Bride 2 (1995), he was signed up by Atlantic Records to make an album of similar material. A New Standard (1999), his debut album, was a sleeper, such that Atlantic cut him loose, but it was still in the traditional jazz charts two years after its release. Tyrell had joined a new wave of retro singers like Diana Krall and Jane Monheit, reinterpreting the same batch of interwar songs that traditional pop singers have been performing regularly since the 1950s. Columbia Records scooped him up, and Standard Time is more of the same. Hailing from Houston, Tyrell has the same Deep South/Southwest accent and the same raspy vocal tone as Dr. John and Leon Russell. His performances, accompanied by a small jazz band occasionally augmented by a small string or brass section, are excuses to set up solos by a group of traditional jazz veterans -- Clark Terry, Joe Sample, Plas Johnson, Toots ...
| | Very Best Of Marc Antoine CD (2003)
Aria - The Ultimate Collection
$8.39 Recorded between 1994 & 2001. Includes liner notes by Jonathan Widran.
Though his simplistic arrangements and often-repeated themes mark him as an artist more likely to be heard in an elevator than a jukebox, Marc Antoine is among the best of the mood music merchants active during the '90s and 2000s. A soft-toned player of the Spanish guitar, Antoine has a gift for intricate yet non-complex playing as well as strong melodies, and his compositions occasionally reveal a surprising depth (if only he'd delegate the drum-programming duties to someone beside himself). This 12-track collection, The Very Best of Marc Antoine, spans five of his LPs for GRP, beginning with "Latin Quarter," (far and away his best performance). None of the rest rise above the level of Muzak, though the addition of live drummer Lil' John Roberts for "On the Strip" makes a big difference, and Antoine summons a bit of magic for the title track of Cruisin'. ~ John Bush

| | Animals Retrospective CD (2004)
Aria - The Ultimate Collection
$13.65 Today the most recognition the Animals get is "House of the Rising Sun" being played on oldies radio, but in the mid-1960s they were a powerful part of the British Invasion, often reckoned on a par with the Beatles, the Stones, and the Who. Like those bands, the Animals had strong roots in blues and R&B, but, in their original incarnation, they stayed closer to those roots than their peers did. This definitive compilation, masterfully assembled by the ABKCO think tank of Teri Landi and Jody Klein, shows the tough, uncompromising use to which the Animals put their American influences. John Lee Hooker's "Boom Boom" is recast as a raw garage rocker glazed with Alan Price's sinister organ riffs, and the aforementioned "House of the Rising Sun" is transformed from a traditional folk lament to an urgent, ominous piece of churning tumult.
Of course, the group skillfully expanded those roots (with the help of some great writers), and turned out some classic working-class-rebel anthems ("We Gotta Get Out of This Place," "It's My Life"). By '67, the original lineup disbanded, and Eric Burdon led a new batch of Animals into a psychedelic West Coast sound ("San ...
