Renowned director Lars Von Trier's stroke of genius in making his 2000 film DANCER IN THE DARK was to cast Iceland-born avant-pop siren Bjork in the central role and then enlist her aid in composing and performing a series of musical numbers for the movie. In the film, Bjork's character Selma lives an unrelentingly hard life as a single mother and factory worker who is quickly going blind. The film's songs come from Selma's inner world, where she (and the audience) find respite from all the harshness of reality.
Bjork's compositions, with orchestral arrangements from Vince Mendoza, hang together on their own quite nicely. Catherine Deneuve (Bjork's co-star) and Radiohead's Thom Yorke make effective vocal cameos, but Bjork's voice and music are the central focus. As we hear the industrial sounds of the factory turn into the rhythm of a song, or follow Bjork's oddly intuitive melodic leaps through a dreamlike haze of strings, it becomes clear that her idiosyncratic writing style adapts quite well to the cinematic milieu. As usual, her uniquely entrancing singing style stands out above almost all else.
"Overture" was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Pop Instrumental Performance and "I've Seen It All" was nominated for Best Instrumental Arrangement Accopanying A Vocalist.

Julie London's 1963 album END OF THE WORLD and 1967s NICE GIRLS DON'T STAY FOR BREAKFAST, both released by Liberty Records, have been compiled in a single disc, 24 track collection featuring London's delicate voice as it glides across the percise arrangements of these recordings. This album includes the whimsical and romantic "Call Me Irresponsible," "My Coloring Book," "Give A Little Whistle," and "I've Got A Crush On You."
A good idea for a two-on-one CD, combining a pair of London's 1960s albums on one disc. The only problem is that neither album is that good, and together they don't come out as terribly exciting. Much more to the point, however, is the close, glittering sound, which puts the string section on "Call Me Irresponsible" or the organ on "Our Day WIll Come" practically in the listener's lap. The arrangements are the best part of either of these records, and they do stand out in this remastering. ~ Bruce Eder

Among the scariest movies ever put on celluloid, like its similarly styled sister, RINGU, this tale of death-by-curse is nothing short of blood chilling. With chapters named after each subsequent victim, it plays like a series of increasingly daunting, deadly vignettes. All of the stories surround a haunted house where the evil spirit of a 5-year-old boy still lurks. The first to enter the residence and be cursed is a young hospice worker visiting an elderly client. She finds the boy duct-taped in a closet, where he first appears to her in the form of a black cat, and then shows his human form which is a shockingly ghoulish white face and blackened eyes. Invisible to all except for those who are next to die, his presence seems like a true mystery. But when family members, friends, curious teenagers, and frightened police investigators begin to drop like flies, it is clear that his spirit thrives. Perhaps it is the unsolvable problem of the boy's vengeance that makes the premise so terrifying--his anger and his penalty cannot be curbed. But unforgettable scenes, such as the boy's very dead mother crawling serpentinely down the stairway, deserve the lion's share of the credit for the fearfulness of the film. What's more, the percussive, electronic score by Shiro Sato is spine-tingling. From Japanese director Takeshi Shimizu, whose RINGU was so successful that it received both prequels and sequels--and an American remake, THE RING, with Naomi Watts--fans should not miss this extraordinary fright-fest.
