| | Soul Classics, Vol. 5 CD
Like its predecessors, Soul Classics, Vol. 5 is all over the place, offering mediocrities as well as a bunch of keepers. Fortunately, there are more keepers on Vol. 5 than on any of its predecessors, featuring such classics as Bobby Womack's "Woman's Gotta Have It," Al Green's "Let's Get Married," Ann Peebles' "I'm Gonna Tear Your Playhouse Down," Teddy Pendergrass' "Can't We Try," Tavares' "Never Had a Love Like This" and the Cornelius Brothers' "Treat Her Like a Lady." ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine Soul Classics, Vol. 5 Music Soul Classics, Vol. 5 Songs | 1. | Woman's Gotta Have It - Bobby Womack |

| | Jay-Z The Blueprint 3 CD (2009)
Soul Classics, Vol. 5 CD music
$15.65 On THE BLUEPRINT 3, still unretired Jay-Z announces "the only rapper to rewrite history without a pen." It's a standard Jigga boast, but the Brooklyn icon has earned the bragging by backing it up, particularly on his gold-label, top-shelf BLUEPRINT series. Ever-ready for battle, Jay-Z takes on autotune, crossover radio, and many other hip-hop concerns with the gloriously jagged rap elan for which he's become known.
When Jay-Z first made a series out of his best album, 2001's The Blueprint, it became a game of high expectations. The first volume saw Jay-Z as vital as he'd ever been, storming back to the hardcore after a few years of commercial success. THE BLUEPRINT 2 took a different tack, with guest shots to compliment his sinuous flows. BLUEPRINT 3 is somewhere between the two, closer to the vitality and energy of the original but not without the crossover bids and guest features of the latter. Kanye West is in the producer's chair for seven tracks, and it's clear he was reaching for the same energy level as the original. "What We Talkin' About" begins the album with a wave of surging, oppressive synth, while Jay-Z enumerates (with an intriguing ...

This trio of young R&B singers might depend on the appeal of their smooth, sensual vocal style to the female population for a great deal of their success, but that's not the whole story. IMX isn't a group of egotistical braggarts, but a thoughtful, sensitive crew with a penchant for sentimentality that walks hand in hand ...

Soul Classics, Vol. 5 CD music
$14.25 *Robin Schmidt - Guitar, lead vocals*Mike Brown - Drums*John Zinder - Bass*Moses Wilks - Tenor Saxophone, lead vocals*Danielle Koplinka-Loehr - TrumpetNon-Existent is playing their own part, however small, in the funk revival of the 21st century, offering their own take on funk as well as a mix of related genres including jazz, blues, rock, and more. Non-Existent's music is often playful, but also has a serious groove; it is largely instrumental, but also catchy; it is highly orchestrated, but also leaves plenty of room for improvisation. The songs are full of tight transitions, challenging rhythmic switches, spirited solos, and overall a whole lot of energy. Drummer Mike Brown and guitarist Robin Schmidt have been playing together since 6th grade (1996)! Throughout their existence, Non-Existent has become continuously funkier and tighter. In the last 6 years they have added bassist John Zinder (also of the band IY), tenor saxophonist Moses Wilks, and trumpet player Danielle Koplinka-Loehr. All living in Ithaca, NY since childhood, the members of Non-Existent are currently at college (Danielle ...
